Deep, mahogany color, rich malt candied, rock sugar flavors with sweet burnt currant and fig aromas. It’s strong alcohol content is tempered by a clean bitterness and complex flavors. This Barley Wine is named for Cornelius de Boom, the San Francisco Belgian Consulate General (1850 to 1851) and surprisingly the name of the alley along-side the 21st Amendment on 2nd Street.

Pitcher at GABBF: Poured a murky copper brown with a tan head. Aroma was dark fruits and malts. Taste was sweet fermented fruit, very hidden alcohol, and malty backbone.

Can (courtesy of AirForceHops). Apricot, fig, and caramelized sugar malt aroma. Hazy amber with small head. Very sweet dried fruit (apricots, raisins, figs) and caramel malt flavor. Nice body. Very tasty - hides its strength well.

Can, 8.4oz, canned 11/7/13. Pours a flat, murky reddish brown color with a thin ring of tan head. A sweet smell of faded citrus hops and caramel malt. Taste is again sweet; candied sugar, bready malt, caramel, and faded citrus hops. Still plenty of abv to be a winter warmer. There are enough lingering bitters to cover the sweetness, but I’d still like to try this fresh. Nice serving size, I’d rather buy a big beer in this size than a bomber any day of the week.

Can courtesy of Secret Summer Santa 2014. Pours hazy goldenish amber with a small offwhite head that doesn’t leave much trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is sweet and malty with caramel, grapefruit juice, resinous wood, pine needles, orange peal, lemon peal and alcohol. Taste is sweet, bitter, malty and slightly fruity with sweet bread, caramel, biscuits, grapefruit juice, resinous wood, pine needles, orange peal, lemon peal, brown sugar and alcohol. Mouthfeel is round, sticky, boozy and medium to full bodied. Finish is sweet and bitter with caramel, biscuits, brown sugar, grapefruit juice, resinous wood, pine needles, orange peal, lemon peal and alcohol. Works but doesn’t offer much excitement.

A lot of resin and booze but this isn’t super enjoyable. Some caramel and hops. Pours cloudy orange with good head and lacing. Finishes a little sweet with some wooden bitterness. Can.

Can - Earthy orange hops, toffee and sweet raisin. Clearish copper with almost no head. Nice sweet caramel with a bit of bitterness and a bit of alcohol burn in the finish. Aftertaste is a bit of burnt orange and bitterness. If the finish had been a little less harsh this would have been perfect.

Reviewed from notes.
The appearance had a somewhat hazy caramel brown color, the head was a thin half finger-ed white, no lacing.
The smell had caramelized malts with a subdued happiness but has a certain dryness about it.
The taste was sweet all the way through with some added brown sugar and dark fruits, no aftertaste, quick dry finish.
On the palate, it sat at/about a medium on the body. It seems like it wants to show a decent sessionable quality to it but it still has that ABV that hides itself well enough to not show its face, there seems to be a dryness coating my mouth and tongue.
Overall, hmmm. .. decent enough American Barley wine that tried to keep the hops in it, I can tell they’re there but there’s a slight \"dead\" quality to it, no worries, I realize the date it was made and the date I’m having it, so nothing to worry about, this is just something I have to come back to fresher.

A hazed dark amber Barleywine with a thin off white head. In aroma, sweet fruity caramel malt with vinous notes, resinous floral hops, decent. In mouth, a sweet fruity caramel malt with vinous notes, licorice, candy fruits, resinous hops. Shared with MartinT.
