Deep, mahogany color, rich malt candied, rock sugar flavors with sweet burnt currant and fig aromas. It’s strong alcohol content is tempered by a clean bitterness and complex flavors. This Barley Wine is named for Cornelius de Boom, the San Francisco Belgian Consulate General (1850 to 1851) and surprisingly the name of the alley along-side the 21st Amendment on 2nd Street.

Boom, indeed. Forget the little cute can it comes in, this one hits full on from the get-go with alcohol burn. Aroma and taste give away to high ABV, faint malt backbone lies somewhere in the mix, but an overall smooth and slightly sweet experience. Nice!

Location: Mini can from Hoboken Vine, 3/13/14
Aroma: The nose is sweet and sticky malts, heavy caramel, bread, spice, and alcohol
Appearance: It pours a murky reddish color with a small beige head and some drippy lace
Flavor: The flavor is heavy sweet, lots of caramel, with some citrus underneath
Palate: The body is full and sticky, some decent boozy heat, and a dry finish
Overall Impression: Interesting, but maybe a little flawed. The sweet malts completely overpower the hop bitterness until the finish, where the hops finally come through. You could also convince me that it is a bit too boozy. Interesting, but something just doesn't quite work.

Room 316 tasting at the Tulip, Bodegraven, 27/09/13 note the dutch sounding name! Barley Wine in a can - I ask you ?!? Lightly hazed golden amber with a thin off white head. Nose is bitter fruits, orange, dark toffee, light booze, grain. Taste comprises bready malts, dark fruit, sugars, toffee, boozey do. Full bodied, fine carbonation, boozey heat in the finish. This was a real let down, no depth one trick pony with boozey heat all over, pretty much bottom of the barley wine class!

Room 316 Tulip Hotel tasting with Ian and Colin. Clear amber beer with a good pale cream colourer head. Palate is soft and a little dry. Dry caramel malt, little lactose. Alcohol spice. Mild dried fruits. Finishes dry. Very dull and disappointing. Expect better from these guys.

Poured from 8.4 fl oz can. Pale amber colour with minimal off-white head. Dark fruit and malt aroma with a definitive hoppy nuance. Starts off with a sweet dark fruity malt flavour, but is quickly overpowered by a bitter hop taste. Dry finish. Wouldn’t classify it as a Barley Wine, it deserves a new category - as it says on the can, it is an "American Style Barley Wine".

11.5% from Sugaya. Quite heavily carbonated for a barley wine, I guess a can might keep the CO2 better... Very dark amber brown with a beige head. Great aroma, rich fruits, figs, plums, really delicious. The taste is smoothly full bodied, sweet fruit, booze, caramel, plums-maybe sugar plums. Quite nice.
