In 2011 Russell Brewing proudly preseted the first annual Golden Stag Home Brewing award in partnership with the Vancouver Homebrewing Association. The top homebrewer won the unique opportunity to brew and package their recipe at a professional brewery.

Grand Prize Winner 2011 Golden Stag Home Brewing Contest. This is truly a limited-edition single-batch beer made with Nick August’s actual homebrew recipe. Over 10 types of malts 2 types of hops, a special yeast strain, Juniper berries licorice root and heaps of extra-special love was used to brew this beer. It’s super dark and super good.

Bottle 22fl.oz.Clear dark black colour with a large, frothy, good lacing, fully lasting, off-white to light beige head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, roasted, caramel, chocolate. Flavour is light heavy sweet and bitter with a long duration, chocolate, roasted, molasses. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20130224]

Bottle from Central City Liquors
Black color, with generous brown head, compact, but not too persistent. The aroma is mild, with roasted malts, and nice bread too, light firewood. The body is leaner than expected, with strong flavor of roasted malts, maybe a bit too dry, and with some salty liquorice; quite strong bitterness, and also strong alcohol perception.
It’s a roasty Imperial Stout, good, but nothing new original.

650 ml bottle. Pours black with large dark tan head which subsides quickly to persistent light head with nice lacing. Aromas of dark chocolate powder. Flavors dark chocolate, coffee grounds, and burnt malts. Some hidden sweetness. A touch acidic but nonetheless quite tasty.
