Bottle: Unfiltered In 1952, in order to place the modernisation of the brewery on the right commercial footing, much care was taken with the launch of Rochefort's two new beers. The refectory beer had been the basis for the development of the ‘Middel’ (also known as ‘Merveille’) which became the Rochefort 6. The 10, however, needed something else to elevate it: candy sugar, steeped in the wort in metal baskets, quite an innovation in those days. Furthermore, two malts were used in the brewing process: pils and caramel malt, as well as wheat starch, two varieties of hops and Rochefort’s own yeast. The result was the powerful Rochefort 10, a beer sure to warm your heart with its robust dose of alcohol.

Original review text: Pours a darh, hazy, reddish brown brew with a tall head that quickly gives way to a thin lacing. There are sediments at the bottom of the bottle, which I always pour into the glass, since I found that, if anything, they add a bit more spiciness to the drink. The smell is amazing, with caramel and raspberries blending in with the more subtle raisin smell. Tastes like raspberries, raisins, with a malty sweetness and a hint of spiciness from the alcohol along with a very pleasant and subtle belgian yiest sourness. Of medium body and carbonation, this is a very easy to drink beer, the only trap being the alcohol concentration.

Bottle poured into a snifter showing caramel brown with two fingers of tanned foam. The nose shows a lovely sweet Belgian yeast forwardness with hints of raisins, toffee, and caramel. The palate is highly carbonated and light to slightly medium bodied. Flavors of black currant, plum, and very light hints of raisin. Surprisingly dry with barely any sweetness but still fruit forward. Strong alcoholic spiciness but does not subtract as it appears on the aftertaste and lasts for a short to medium finish. I can’t wait to try this aged.

From bottle at FOB, in Rimini, Italy. Pours a dark amber with cappuccino foam. Aroma has licorice, fruits under spirits and nuts. Body is thick and sticky. Taste is consistent with aroma, with marked sweetness. Palate is great, with persistence of the sweet flavors and stickiness.

Bottle shared with JMD at HNB 25.08.16 and with JFE at Belga Queen, Brussels, 03.10.19. Almost ebony. Foamy and persistent beige head and lacing. Complex aroma of berries marinated in sherry, cream liquor, caramel, prune compote, English Yule tide cakes and medium dark malt. Similar taste, with soft liquorice in aftertaste. Creamy mouthfeel.

Murky dark brown, thin beige head shows nice persistence and leaves moderate lacing. Aroma is in the likes of a dark fruits cake: molasses, dark/dried fruits, sugar. I’m also detecting a hint of coffee. Alcohol is detectable but not too aggressive. Taste reflects the aroma; the beer is obviously on the sweet side but pleasantly so, with a hint of spiciness in the finish. Again alcohol is detectable but not over the top, brings a warming feel. Full body, light crispness, nicely creamy mouthfeel. Good

330ml bottle. Dark pour with a thick lingering head. Deep flavours with spices, dried fruits (raisins and dates in particular) and a sweet chocolatey note. Finishes like a port: fruity and boozy. The body is quite carbonated and perhaps thinner than the strength would imply, and there’s nothing done to hide the strength.

Átlátszatlan barna, sok üledékkel, nagy és tartós habbal. Illata észteres, és karamelles. Íze erősen karamelles, pici pörkölt beütéssel, gyenge gyümölcsös mellékízzel. Az alkohol nem bújik el, bizony érezni a sör erejét. Nagyon testes, kifejezetten laktató, szénsavas sör.
