The Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephan has revived an old beer brand from the 1950s as a one-time release. When Johannes Weiss, Weihenstephan’s Sales Manager Export, discovered the 1950’s Kristallweizenbock label, it sparked an idea. “I suggested using hops with ‘crystal’ names,” said Weiss, “smaragd (emerald) and opal. [These hops] add fruity flavors to the beer and complement the name.” From there, Brewmaster Tobias Zollo continued to develop Weiss’ idea, building out the malt bill and other flavor profiles. Kristallweizenbock differs from Weihenstephan’s traditional weizenbock, Vitus, as it is filtered and has a stronger focus on hops, without being too “hoppy.”

0.33 l bottle @ home from Csakajo. Pours clear golden with persistent white head. Nose is strong, spicey wheat with cereals and slight banana notes. Its taste is similar to the aroma, wheat and cereals with spicy notes (I'd swear there's some pepper in there). Short, sweetish finish, soft carbonation and medium body. I've no idea what to expect from a kristallweizen so this entry's sorta subjective.

Bottle from Lekkerbier, Sint Nicolaasga. Aroma has lots of banana, wheat, sweet fruits, more ripe bananas with a floral touch and some notes of bubblegum. Flavour is sweet and lightly bitter. Body is medium. Clean and smooth, bit sweet and banana-heavy for my taste.

(Bottle) Golden colour, slightly hazy, with frothy off-white head. Malty, spicy nose with notes of bread, orange, apricots, banana and clove. Malty, fruity, spicy taste with bread, apricots, orange, banana, clove, hay and honey. More than medium body, with a certain sweetness. Harmonious, soft, well balanced and really tasty. Very nice.

Pours very clear indeed ! Blonde, medium, creamy and stable white head. Smell is banana, intense. mild cloves. Taste is full, banana, creamy, very mild clove, very restrained bitterness. Tad sweet, even. Noticable strength, but not boozy at all. Nice!
