The Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephan has revived an old beer brand from the 1950s as a one-time release. When Johannes Weiss, Weihenstephan’s Sales Manager Export, discovered the 1950’s Kristallweizenbock label, it sparked an idea. “I suggested using hops with ‘crystal’ names,” said Weiss, “smaragd (emerald) and opal. [These hops] add fruity flavors to the beer and complement the name.” From there, Brewmaster Tobias Zollo continued to develop Weiss’ idea, building out the malt bill and other flavor profiles. Kristallweizenbock differs from Weihenstephan’s traditional weizenbock, Vitus, as it is filtered and has a stronger focus on hops, without being too “hoppy.”

Draught @ Fox & Houndd, Sønderborg. Pours clear golden with small white head. Clear aroma of malt and banana, with touches of yeast. Sweetish flavour of malt, banana and yeast, with mild, bitter notes of hops and sourish citric and grainy touches. Estery and malty aftertaste with mild acidic hints. Very good for the style and not unenjoyable as such.

Draught, 7.5%. Weak fruity aroma. Cloudy golden colour. Good stable white head. The flavour is fruity, papery and yeasty. Mild sweetness and more paper in the finish. Does not taste especially wheaty or strong in alcohol. I suppose, like standard ABV Kristallweizens, it loses some flavour and character when filtered.

Bottle. Banana, green apples, cloves, fermenting pear, grass. Odd mix between the look of a Helles, nose of wet hops and Weizen yeast notes.

12 oz. bottle from Safeway. Completely clear appearance. Aroma of wet dog, yeast, and mineral hints. The flavor is a touch odd. And don’t get me wrong, LOVE this brewery. The hop profile doesn’t completely go with this traditional yeast. Not bad, quaffable but not reaching for more.

33 cL bottle. Pours a clear, golden color, with a big, foamy, off-white head. The aroma is caramel, hay, biscuit dough, rosemary, and dust. Sweet and syrupy, with a light bitterness. Medium to heavy body, with a creamy, silky mouthfeel. This is a mild, yeasty, and nicely balanced beer.

330ml bottle, many thanks to Koelschtrinker for this! Pours clear gold, large fluffy white head. Aroma has great weiss yeast aromatics. Taste is similarly more yeasty than expected. Good banana, cream, vanilla action nice and smooth on the palette. An excellent, flavoursome clear weizenbock.

“Weihenstephaner Kristall-Weizenbock“, Flasche (33 cl) von Getränke Hoffmann, Berlin. - Tief goldgelb, blank, feiner Schaum. - In der Nase breites helles Malz mit parfümierter, leicht fuseliger Obergärigkeit und knackigem Hopfen: Kräuter, Pampelmuse, Rhabarber. - Antrunk satt weizenbierig-hellmalzig mit gerstiger Härte, Kandiszuckersüße und Leere dort, wo man die weizentypische Hefe erwartet. Knackiger Hopfen mit unreifer Frucht reibt sich heftig an der glatten, süßen Malzfülle. Mild rezent, breit, Anklänge an Kräuterlikör. Im Abgang Rhabarber und “grüne“ Hopfenherbe. - Eigenwillige Kombination von schwerer Malzfülle, obergäriger Duftigkeit und adstringierender Hopfung, die mich nicht ganz überzeugt. Vielleicht zu glatt? Aber unbedingt probierenswert!

Beer #2 of 17 for each day of the 2018 Winter Olympics - One for A Country Participating in the Games: #2 - Deutschland (Germany) Crystal clear (oh, is that what Kristall means?) golden coloured body with a large, soapy white head, that starts at about five centimetres tall and dies down to just a single centimetre. Aroma of fresh bread, pungent yeast, a lot of coriander seed, some bubblegum, a touch of citrus and oranges and a light hint of nutmeg and perfumey spices. Light to Medium-bodied; Assertive yeast element at first with a big coriander seed and wheat profile with a nice bubble gum and light spice flavour and a light note of white pepper and grass at the tail end. Aftertaste shows some of the grass, clean sugars,a touch of alcohol and ending with a pleasant and lightly earthy malt flavour with the wheat showing strongest. Overall, a very nice weizenbock with a great, simplistic flavour with a little spicey quality from the yeast strain, but a relatively sweet and fruity flavour with smooth flavours and a robust, but easy-drinking complexity at the end with some very light alcohol flavours at the tail end. I sampled this 33 cL bottle purchased from Whole Foods in New York (Columbus Circle/Central Park), New York on 11-June-2017 for US$2,99 sampled at home in Washington on Day #2 of the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, [Republic of/South] Korea on 10-February-2018.
