The Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephan has revived an old beer brand from the 1950s as a one-time release. When Johannes Weiss, Weihenstephan’s Sales Manager Export, discovered the 1950’s Kristallweizenbock label, it sparked an idea. “I suggested using hops with ‘crystal’ names,” said Weiss, “smaragd (emerald) and opal. [These hops] add fruity flavors to the beer and complement the name.” From there, Brewmaster Tobias Zollo continued to develop Weiss’ idea, building out the malt bill and other flavor profiles. Kristallweizenbock differs from Weihenstephan’s traditional weizenbock, Vitus, as it is filtered and has a stronger focus on hops, without being too “hoppy.”

Bottle, stable long lasting bubbly head, clear deep golden color aroma of wheat and banana with hints of citrus and metal, flavor of wheat, waffle and banana with hints of toothpaste and metal, lightish sweetness, light lingering fruity aftertaste. Nice and enjoyable.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a clear bright golden color with a small foamy white head that left minimal lacing. The aroma was sweet and yeasty with cracker, a bit of pepper and some mustiness. The flavor was musty and yeasty with notes of cracker and bread. Long finish. Medium body. Ok but so much less than their regular weizenbock.

Bottle pour into shaker pint glass from The Beer Store, Nashua. Appearance is clear highlighter yellow with fair sparkle, 1/2-finger width fizzy white head with poor retention and minimal lacing. Aroma is wheat, banana, bubblegum, yeast. Taste is spicy, tart wheat, yeast, light banana/bubblegum. Palate is light-to-medium bodied with frothy texture, lively carbonation and dry finish as taste. Overall, all the elements of the style. Nice.

Smell of yeast, some banana, dough. Golden colour, high white head. Aroma of banana, overripe apples, alcohol, grain. Sweet with some sourness. Lively carbon. Basically fine, but a weizen just needs the yeast.

Bottle at home. Bright golden color, very good white head. The abv is 7,5%, but from the tasting it seems only about 5%. Good taste, like this one very much!

Bottle. A lightly hazy yellow-orange colored beer with a dense two finger thick white head leaving some curtains. Banana, some caramel, a touch of cloves, bread, alcohol and some peach. There's a soft bitterness in the mouth, it's lightly warming, with a good carbonation. Full body. Banana and caramel in the flavor too, bready malts in the back. Cloves, warming alcohol, peach hints and some yellow apples. Lasting finish with some lemon notes. Sure a delicious sipper. 171013
