The Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephan has revived an old beer brand from the 1950s as a one-time release. When Johannes Weiss, Weihenstephan’s Sales Manager Export, discovered the 1950’s Kristallweizenbock label, it sparked an idea. “I suggested using hops with ‘crystal’ names,” said Weiss, “smaragd (emerald) and opal. [These hops] add fruity flavors to the beer and complement the name.” From there, Brewmaster Tobias Zollo continued to develop Weiss’ idea, building out the malt bill and other flavor profiles. Kristallweizenbock differs from Weihenstephan’s traditional weizenbock, Vitus, as it is filtered and has a stronger focus on hops, without being too “hoppy.”

Cloudy and very pale with a thin head. Lots of banana and plastic phenols on the nose. Sticky, bland and sweet, more plastic than anything else but some phenols too. Not great - a lot of the worst of this style is here.

On tap at PIB 2017, pours a cloudy blonde with a small white head. Aroma brings out banana upfront, with lots of esters and some phenols. Flavour is very estery and banana-y, with tons of esters, banana and phenols. Very messy and chaotic. It's not very pleasant.

Bottle. Clear golden color, medium white head. Nice aroma of spiced banana. Taste has clove, banana, lightly sweet bubblegum. Tasty. Torn between having a kristalweizen tick or a weizenbock tick, wish we could have both.

Draught @ Bierhuis Rotterdam, Tennispalatsinaukio 4 (Kampin keskus), Helsinki, Finland 00100. [ As Weihenstephaner Kristallweizenbock].Light unclear medium orange yellow colour with a average, frothy - creamy, good lacing, mostly to fully lasting, white head. Aroma is light moderate malty, wheat, moderate yeasty, fruity yeast, weizen yeast, clove, light banana. Flavor is moderate sweet and light bitter with a long duration, weizen yeast, clove. Body is medium, texture is oily - creamy, carbonation is soft. [20170405] 7-3-7-3-14

A golden beer, a head is big and blond. Aroma has fruitness of bananas, some flowers and citrus. Taste has wheat, bananas, flowers, also some bitterness and sweetness of honey. Medium bodied. Interesting, hefe with the aromatic hops.

Bottle. Clear golden, big white head. A: big dried banana, spice, Sherry. Medium to full body. Medium sweet taste. Banana, clove. Vinous. Light balancing bitterness. Rather simple. Yet pretty damn delicious.

0.33 l bottle from ’Bierhandwerk’, best before February 2018. Clear, golden yellow with a medium large, foamy, stable, white head. Sweetish, yeasty-spicy and slightly fruity aroma of mainly banana, vanilla and clove. Quite sweet, malty, rather yeasty-spicy taste of banana, vanilla, clove and shy notes of citrus and coriander, followed by a short, slightly bitter, rather yeasty-spicy finish. Medium body, rather effervescent mouthfeel, average carbonation. Tasty, pleasant and saturating beer, but overall I would probably prefer any decent unfiltered Weizenbock. Doesn’t feel like 7.5 % at all btw.

Bottle from Brewers Haven. Clear, bright golden pour with small, tight, white head. Grassy, grainy aroma, small hints of the banana notes from the style. Taste also adds some fruitiness, melon to the nice grain base. More banana at the finish. Not your traditional weizen.

Bottle: Clear golden, loose ’n lacy white head, mineralic and wheaty nose, nevertheless some yeasty traces detectable; moderate bitter-sweet flavour with a slight acidity, medium bodied, but slim MF; lingering wheaty-fruity and herbal-citrussy finish. A fine example of an odd style...

Bottle from Systembolaget. Pours clear yellow with a frothy, white head. Aroma of wheat, yeast, dough, banana and bubblegum. Solid weizen altogether but a bit amplified. Very clean and crisp wheat flavor. On the sweeter side.
