The Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephan has revived an old beer brand from the 1950s as a one-time release. When Johannes Weiss, Weihenstephan’s Sales Manager Export, discovered the 1950’s Kristallweizenbock label, it sparked an idea. “I suggested using hops with ‘crystal’ names,” said Weiss, “smaragd (emerald) and opal. [These hops] add fruity flavors to the beer and complement the name.” From there, Brewmaster Tobias Zollo continued to develop Weiss’ idea, building out the malt bill and other flavor profiles. Kristallweizenbock differs from Weihenstephan’s traditional weizenbock, Vitus, as it is filtered and has a stronger focus on hops, without being too “hoppy.”

Funny I haven’t tasted this bottle before. Clear pale. A somewhat volatile lager aroma. Decent co2. Greets the tongue with a stronger personality coming close to an aged cheap american high gravity ice beer case beer. Well, perhaps a little more refined considering the alky. Yes, be hard to separate this from a decently made ice lager, you’d never know this was a kristal wheat. Yes, a little bit medicinal in the end. Yep, I see the date is over a year old.

12 oz bottle poured, picked up art Special Brews. Quite an enjoyable style for me, and likely the style I enjoy the most, that I get to try unique offerings the least. Probably the longest brewery name, single beret man combo I’ve seen in a while as well, if that means anything at all. Well, to me it does! Clear, shiny golden pour, a bit oily, with a ton of foam head. Floral forward aroma, with some mixed grains. Flavor is a cool floral, banana fruit combination, with a crisp, refreshing finish. Very easy drinking, and quite enjoyable. Slightest hint of apple, or white grape in the background add to this. Interesting, and tasty beer here.

11.2oz bottle. Filtered tan body. Steady frothy white head. A solid German beer. The filtration keeps the body sort of smooth, but there is a lot of depth. I don’t find any of the hop tones to be particularly appealing, but there is an assertive bitterness that it lacking in most German beers that make it to the US. Killer malt tones, lagering expertise. Solid.

0.33l bottle. Clear golden body with a thick white head. Aroma of banana, sweet grains, a tiny bit of lemon zest and a generous amount of spicy hops. The taste starts with grains followed by hay, banana and spicy hops. The body is a bit weak for the bitterness and the ABV, but overall i like this beer.

Gott.
