Roken is a Scanian smoked beer brewed with smoked whiskey malt. Fermentation takes place with a mixture of various yeast strains, including the genus Brettanomyces. The beer is carbonated naturally by fermentation in the bottle and will therefore give a thin layer of yeast on the bottom.

(Bottle, Stockholm Beer Festival, 5 Oct 2012) Golden amber colour with brief, off-white head. Smoky nose with peat, smoke, apricots and Islay whisky. A bit like a peat fire on a fresh spring evening on Islay. Malty, smoky taste with notes of apricots, smoke and spicy hints of wild yeast. Very fresh with a balanced smoke character. The idea of combining smoked malt with brett yeast seamed a bit adventurous at first, but might be quite a brilliant idea. The spicy yeast character balances the smoke and peat quite nicely and gives a certain freshness to the beer. Interesting and very nice.

Bottled at SBWF. Lightly hazy golden, minimal head. Extreme peaty smoke aroma. Sweet and very smoky. Concentrated flavours of peach, perfume, lemon and urine. Phenolic and rubbery. Interesting, but very unpleasant.

Bottle at Stockholm Beer and Whiskey Festival 2012. Clear golden liquid with small to white head. Aroma of smoke, sausage, barnyard, grain and licorice. Taste is light sweet and light bitter with notes of smoke and biscuit. Light to medium bodied with medium to high carbonation. Quite all right, though I’m not a huge fan of smoked beers.

Sample @ Stockholm Beer & Whisky 2012. Pours clear golden with no head worth mentioning. Smell is sweet with smoked salmon, soup stock, bay leaves, crackers, leather, dark bread and the not easy to forget smell of old dried urine. Taste is sweet with bread, burnt wood, hay, leather, lemon zest, smoked salmon, lots, smoke of barnyard and hints of manure. Taste is round, tiny watery and light to medium bodied. Finish is tiny sweet and tiny bitter with bread, leather, wood, smoked meat and fish and hints of smoke. Rather strange and nasty and sadly very much something I didn’t enjoy.

Sample at SBWF 2012. Clear golden with a small white head. Really a lot of smoke and brett in the aroma. Also leather and roasted notes. Not as much smoke and brett in the taste. An interesting beer.
