Olde LaMontavious is an “Old” or “Stock Ale” in reference to 19th century breweries that would age this style a full year before serving. Against the Grain’s take on the style obviously does not include the one year aging period, but we brewed our version with 1200# of high quality English Maris Otter barley malt and a generous amount of molasses to give some complex sweetness. Then we hopped liberally with English Nugget, Kent Goldings and American Cascade and fermented with a Scottish style yeast, resulting in a dark, rich and malty ale. Then right before serving we took this beer out on a chartered boat driven by Steve Guttenberg and had an alien from the planet Antarea (who looked a lot like Brian Dennehy) charge the entire batch with his life force. Since this only can happen once every 10,000 years make sure you drink this beer while you can.

Fra fat på Craft Beer Co, Brixton 4 Nov 12. Rødbrun. Skummet fester seg som prikker på glasset. Sterk søt plommearoma. Sherrypreg. God frukt- & plommesmak. Litt syrlig bitter etterhvert. Blir vel heftig. Sikkert god som dessert.

Tap at Craft Clerkenwell - 27/11/12. Lightly hazed mid brown with reddish hues and a big creamy/frothy off white head which retains well. Nose is spice, ginger, orange peel, nutty tones, caramel, nutmeg. Tastes of sweet sugars - but fairly well tempered and not over the top, caramel, toffee, a little booze, orange, hints of spice. Medium bodied with fine carbonation leading to a sweetish fruity finish. Decent.

Half pint from keg at Craft Beer Co in Brixton, shared with Finn. Clear mahogany coloured body.Patchy surface, decent lacing down the glass. Smell of plums and malty sweetness. Dark plums in flavour, rather cherry like. Medium to full bodied. Very nice, perhaps a little to much on the sweet side (London, 04.11.2012).

On tap at the Craft. Clear dark red beer with a little pale tan head. Smooth palate with mild fine carbonation. Smooth malt - slightly creamy and with mild minerals. Nice dark cherry fruit going on underneath with bitter seltzer minerals. Finishes with malt cream and more of the same. Interesting and tasty.

Draft. Deep brown body with red highlights. Small, tan head. Aroma of toffee, alcohol, toasted grain, herbs. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes lightly to moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, watery/velvety texture that is lightly sticky in the finish, moderate carbonation. The balance favors the sweet malts (with some flavors of raw grain). A bit boozy in the finish, with peppery alcohol notes.

Tap. Toffee malt with cherry notes. Dark reddish brown with small head. Slightly sweet toffee, cherry flavor with mildly bitter herbal hops finish. Very tasty - hides its strength well.
