Vague Future is our take on the once forgotten Black India Pale Ale. This beer is built like a West Coast style IPA but with the addition of roasted and high dried malts to add color and malt complexity to the mix. The malts lay down notes of bittersweet chocolate, African coffee beans, and burnt sugar, however, these notes are quick to disappear from the palette as the beer is fermented dry. Amarillo, Simcoe, Citra, and Azzaca (hot side & double dry hop) lay down aromatics of citrus, tropical fruits, and blueberry. In a glass void of light the future is vague…

Pint can pours with a nice black colored body that supports a mocha head of foam. The aroma offers up chocolate malts, a dash of caramel malts, as well as mostly vague spicy to maybe woody hoppiness. The taste delivers that same blend of mostly chocolate malts and then some caramel like malts to start. And like the nose too I get modes hop bitterness that seems spicy to woody to vaguely bitter citrus. Oakes is right, this could use a little more of a hop presence to round out the CDA experience. Really nice beer otherwise.

Somewhat murky, thin head, quite toasty, light cocoa, medium bitterness, off-dry. Not my pocket of black ipa -too dry and not hoppy enough.
