This ancient Finnish-style brew dates back to the 1500s as one of the oldest continuously brewed styles. Deep amber in color, this rugged brew’s distinctive aroma and flavor comes from aging on a bed of juniper berries. The herbal, woodsy, and ripe citrus character of the juniper enlivens a sturdy and smooth malt backbone for a fresh and flavorful brew. At Samuel Adams we love experimenting, This series of limited edition brews represents some of our favorite small batch creations.

Bottle. Pours with a mostly clear bronze hued body with an off-white head. Aromas are spicy, marmalade, juniper, spruce. Malty and nutty. Flavors are very spicy, nutty, juniper. Lots of spice notes going on. Some eugenol numbness. Very lively carbonation, medium bodied.

22 oz bottle. Pours a somewhat hazy orange to copper with an off-white head. Aroma starts with a whiff of honey, then some tartness, berries, minerals. Juniper berry and toasty malt flavors, honey, some bitterness and light tartness. Honestly, I just really can’t get into these flavors.

Bottle opens with a huge crack and bubbles immediately try to escape, luckily my cat like reflexes got the bottle top into the glass before any product was wasted. Deep clear reddish brown with a huge off white head that takes forever to recede. The aroma is spicy, no shit huh? It doesn’t strike me as much different from a Belgian strong dark honestly. Dark caramelized and brown sugars with some dark fruit and a virtual spice rack of aromas that range from nutmeg to coriander to mint. Juniper berries perhaps? The flavor is rich and malty with lots of dark sugary flavor. There’s an earthy spicy woody component in there that I can only assume comes from juniper somehow. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation and a sweet light syrups mouthfeel. Not a bad brew, but honestly not my cup of tea.
