Sampled on draft at the brewpub this beer poured a black color with an enormous creamy tan head that lingered forever and left good lacing. The aroma was dry, bitter and woody with a bit of vanilla and cream. The flavor was dry, woody and somewhat biter with smoke, roasty malts and a touch of cream. Long wood and smoke finish. Medium body and very creamy. Meh.

Cask aged version. Dark pour, but you can see a lot of light coming in around the edges... very thin looking. Not much head. Aromas are of peat, smoke and a little whisky. Mouthfeel is on par with the visual. Very thin. Flavor is similarly fairly light. For a stout this certainly doesn’t have a lot of punch. For a cask-aged stout it is downright boring.

Black pour with a head like chocolate mousse. Hangs for quite a while. Barely any aroma, but the aroma I do get is sort of roasty. Watery stout taste just like any other stout in this category. However, I really do appreciate the small amount of carbonation present. Too many of these are totally flat but the carbonation on this one ois welcomed. This is on par or better than Guinness. Good example of the style. Just like a widget beer, low carbonation. I must say, IMHO, this is slightly better than the UK standard versions.
