Nice surprise on draft at MBC-Lansing, fall 2011. Nice balance of hoppiness; high ABV is smooth on the palate. Good from the first sip through the last.

On tap at the brewery. Hazy medium orange body, medium buff head. Sharp citrusy, piney aroma with potent boozy alcohol. Over-the-top, sharp, syrupy-sweet body with slick, resiny grapefruity and piney hops backed by thick, caramely, sugary malt. Prominent alcohol. Long bitter finish with lingering residual sugars. I found this hard to drink. Definitely one of the most potent, brash Double IPAs.

Bottle, picked up from brewery (no label, but named Imperial IPA). Body is a nice copper color with a small and frothy head. Aromas are of citrus hops and a little touch of pine. Flavor is bitterly hoppy... grapefruit and pine... that give way to a caramel malt presence that seems just a bit underpowered for all of the hops. Alcohol is obvious and little attempt is made to hide it. There is a bit of a peppery edge to this beer as well. An interesting contrast to some of the very malt heavy Californian IPA’s in that the malt is there and gives a nice thick mouthfeel, but the hops still never disappear from the limelight.
