The people of Tampa Bay have fallen prey to a pirate invasion annually for well over 100 years. After more than a century of failing to repel these seafaring raiders in their anachronistic wooden ships and despite access to modern sea, land and air arsenals that ostensibly should make short work of wind powered vessels equipped with naught but cast iron cannons and raging scurvy, it occurred to the folks of Cigar City Brewing that if you can’t beat them, start saying “Arrrr Matey!” We have brewed Invasion Pale Ale, a citrusy, tropical and low-alcohol session beer brewed for those long days of marauding, pillaging and pirating. Cheers!

Tap at Alehouse Palmhof. Pours cloudy amber with a medium head. Aroma is tropical fruit, citric fruit, passion fruit, pineapple, some resin. Body is medium, quite dense and fruity and sweet, also decently bitter. Matching carbonation. Bitter fruity palate. Quite straightforward as an APA, but almost an IPA as well. Well done, with a good balance.

An orange beer, a head is big and blond. Aroma has mango, citrus, hint of fructose. Taste has citrus, pine, slightly vegetable notes. Medium bodied, low carbonation. Slightly unpure, good anyway.

On tap at First Draft, pours a hazy golden with a small white head. Aroma brings out light biscuity malt and light citrus hops. Flavour is well-balanced, with some citrus hops and dry biscuity malt. Ordinary, but clean and well-balanced. Good stuff.

One of the many hundreds of Cigar City beers, from a can. Egg-white, frothy and thick but quite coarsely structured and therefore quickly dissipating head, breaking in equal patches and leaving some irregular lacing on the edge of the glass; lightly hazy peach blonde robe with vaguely ochre-ish hue and quite vivid, but thin and refined strings of fizz piercing through; a bit more hazy and more orangey with sediment. Quite expressive, bit ’dank’ but in any case ’juicy’, vividly fruity and mouthwatering aroma of freshly squeezed grapefruit juice, mandarin flesh, old lime peel, soggy white bread, lovely sweet orange juice, ripe lychee, Cape gooseberry, fainter hints of olive oil, raw lettuce, green melon, spruce, rainwater, minerals. Lively but still subtle and exquisite fruitiness in the onset, a bit exotic and very juicy, hinting at lychee, starfruit and pineapple, sweetish with softly souring edges, citrusy freshness filling the mouth, light, very elegant, with a soft fizz on the tongue and a smooth, bit oily, delicate, almost feathery mouthfeel. Pleasant, light, rounded cereally and slightly bready malt sweetish undertone, soft minerally edges here and there, developing into a refreshingly fruity, juicy finish, pushing upwards beautifully delicate retronasal aromas of orange, grapefruit juice and the slightest hint of pine; the hops responsible for this lovely retronasal fragrance also establish a citrus peel-ish bitterness all the way back at the root of the tongue, lingering after swallowing and a bit resiny, but in all remaining very gentle and exhibiting the same degree of subtlety and lightness as the fruity and malty parts. At a half year of age, this was probably a bit more fragrant when fresh, but it has firmly remained a delicate beauty, with all parts matched equally and at the same time delicately expressive as it should be in an American style pale ale. What a lovely little beer, I could drink gallons of this... This is an APA the way it should be done, subtly using New World hoppiness without turning too IPA-like as many others do, utterly elegant, light-bodied but still substantial enough, extremely quenching and refreshing, and quite literally appetizing. Kudos to Cigar City for this delicate little beauty, once again.

355 ml can from Beergium, canned 12/19/16.
Orange-amber, hazy body, with a big, frothy, lacing, slightly yellowish head.
Aroma of grapefruit, passion fruit, pineapple, mango, orange, resin, some pine, some biscuit.
Tastes similar, with more pine and a medium dryness.
Medium, oily mouthfeel, with a lively carbonation.
Finishes quite dry, moderate bitter, citric, zesty, piney, fruity, subtly sweet.
Very nice. Very fruity and crisp, with some lovely piney spiciness and a refreshing dryness towards the end. Not very outstanding maybe, there are quite a lot of APAs like this, but very well balanced stuff.
