Schwarzbier is a Dark Lager originating in Germany. It's brewed with a plethora of specialty dark malts, but lacks the roasty bitterness of a stout. We cold conditioned (lagered) this one for 16 weeks! Crisp, clean, and crushable, but sturdy enough for winter. Notes of freshly baked gingerbread, chocolate covered almonds, dried figs, and gentle lager esters.

Canned 12/16/24, drunk 8/26/25.
Dark, clear. Big, beige head, slowly to cover.
Rich base malt accented with chocolate and hazelnut and very low roast. Warm chocolate and toffee with light honey and mild, herbal hop notes. Clean.
Soft, very malty, big base malt tones with low dark malts. Possibly even more tmavy/dunkel than schwarzbier, but whatever. Definitely a strong hazelnut character with nutty, bready, sweet, honey-like malts and great attenuation. Really like the reliance on base malt, as with all great lagers.

On tap at the brewery. Appearance is opaque black with no sparkle, healthy finger-width pillowy creamy beige head (reminiscent of a nitro) with lots of attractive soapy lacing. Aroma is roasted malts (earthy, mild bitterness). Taste is more sweet than bitter roasted malt, hint of anise, holiday spice, chocolate and nuts (hints appreciated more as it warms) but not getting gingerbread nor figs (in brewers description). Mouthfeel is medium bodied with thick, smooth, creamy texture with soft carbonation and finish as taste. Overall, strong aroma and flavor that are spot on for the style with some unique hints.
