Brewed to an old monastic recipe by Little Valley Brewery in Hebden Bridge, this dark, Trappist-style beer is full-bodied with a taste of rich fruit and malt. Bottle conditioned to ‘dubbel’ strength.
Working closely with Wim van der Spek, head brewer at Little Valley Brewery in Hebden bridge, the monks of Ampleforth have once again begun to sell ‘La Biere Anglaise’. Following extensive research, Wim has paired modern brewing techniques with the fragments of information available to produce Ampleforth Abbey Dubbel – a beer as rich in history as it is in flavour.

330ml bottle from Mainsgill. Deep red with a fluffy tan head that quickly fizzed away. Sweet, caramel, bubblegummy aroma. Taste is toffee, banana and surprisingly strong alcohol flavour for 7%

Bottle from that shop in Malton. Appearance - deep brown to black with a generous fluffy head. Nose - a bit meaty at outset. Taste - toffee, nuts and burnt biscuit. Palate - medium bodied with a creamy texture and a dry but lacking in balance finish. Overall - somehow this isn’t quite like Last Trappe or Westmalle.

Hazy, reddish-brown beer with an off-white head. Fruity, yeasty aroma. The beer is quite lively so initially the flavour is obscured somewhat by fizz on the tongue. There’s a fair bit of banana in the taste and perhaps a touch of apple as well. Yeasty, bready quality to it. It’s not as rich as you might hope for a beer of this sort and there’s a bit of an unfortunate alcohol-y aftertaste as well which isn’t really concealed by anything else.

Hazy brown with thin soapy head. Dry and malty with a light fruitiness. Perhaps a bit of raisin in there too. Certainly marketed as an Abbey Dubbel but lacking in a bit of depth and complexity of many of its Belgian counterparts.

Bottle. It’s a hazy dark amber to brown body and a small, dense light beige head. The aroma is cellarish and with dark fruits and dark sugars. Some paint thinner too. The flavor has dark dried fruits and dark sugars, with some paint thinner and alcohol. Rather thin on the palate, with a pleasant carbonation level. Some paint thinner in the finish too, but the dark sugars and dark dried fruits dominates. Nothing special going on here, not at all. 140808
