Cask (gravity) @ 28th Pigs Ear Beer and Cider Festival 2011, at The Round Chapel in Hackney, London, EnglandDark brown color with a average to large, frothy - fizzy, good lacing, fully lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, roasted, caramel, dark malt, moderate to heavy hoppy, citrus, flowers, perfume, orange - citrus. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter with a long duration, hop bitter, good balanced, dry, burnt malt and licorice notes. Body is medium to full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. 0.33l bottle. This one pours a deep dark brown body down in my glass and on top there is a great looking big and big-bubbly khaki head. It smells really nice this one! Lot's of fruity hops, salty licorice, chocolate, marzipan, roastiness and some suiting boozy alcohol. Yeah, this has to be one of the better BIA's I've nosed I beleive. It has a silky smooth oily mouthfeel and its soft to average carbonated. Great flavors as well! This is impressive stuff. A gentle roastiness juiced up with warming alcohol, soft chocolate, a fruity bitterness and it all feels really integrated and tasty all the way. Ends with a nice leather/licorice flavor that goes on and on in the aftertaste. Really impressive! 30.06.2012

Poured from 330ml bottle at home into UK half pint glass (Jan ’12). This is a hopped up/sexed up version of the standard Conqeuror Black IPA (5% ABV). Deep chocolate brown verging on black in colouration with a pretty thin tan head. Great piney hoppy nose to this beer with a little sweet malt. Dried fruits - something tropical and citrusy in there. Hints of toffee, maybe even a faint taste of coffee a little Licquorice. There’s a lot going on in the glass. Some 7 or 8 cask barrels were also released into the wild and I was also lucky enough to sample this in that format at Egham beer festival (Nov ’11) - it didn’t disappoint! 2 word simple review for this great Black IPA - " BOSH - WALLOP " !!!

Bottle at home ... deep black ... thin tan head ... deep coffee and roast malt nose ... light oily body ... rich chocolate malts and big pine ... juicy and rich ... sweet roast .. very nice... little coco nib (how odd)

Black, frothy light tan head, good lacing
Aroma - mellow roasted malts, deep rich dark malts, hint of floral hops, not a lot of aroma
Taste - Mellow rich roasted malts, rich dark caramel, chocolate, soft floral hops, bit of citrus, bit of soft coffee, this is stouty and malty for a black IPA (which I like) with soft floral citrus in background, bit perfumy hop, alcohol very well hidden, good flavour.
Palate - soft carb. medium body, smooth mellow roast palate. bit oily. Finish as main flavour...smooth soft lingering chocolate malts and soft floral citrus
Overall - Good stouty BIPA, slight unusual perfumy hint and aroma perhaps a bit subdued but overall it’s a really nice beer.....need to re-rate I’ve underrated this beer - it’s definitely a 4.0 at least

Cask at Pigs Ear. Opaque black beer. Bubbly tan head. Smooth silky palate. Silky dark malt supports resinous hops. Lovely hops which are mixture of pine and citrus. Light dry finish. Lovely and highly drinkable.

Bottle bought at Windsor Farm Shop, Windsor, Berks. A very dark brown/black coloured pour with a medium beige head on top. Mild coffee, roasty aroma. Tastes roasty, malty, coffee, hoppy. Rich and warming, good stuff.

Bottle at home in London. Pours black-red with a foamy, beige head. Big and juicy pine aroma with nice, moderate roasted malts. Medium to strong sweet flavor, some dark malts, light caramel, pine, grapefruit. Medium to full bodied with fine to average carbonation. Sticky, sweet and resinous finish, more roast, light cocoa, lots of juicy grapefruit and pine. Excellent black IPA.

[Bottle from Westholme Stores, Goring] Black with ruby hints, a negligible head and a pleasant light frothy fizz. Roasted malt dominates at first with plenty of smokiness and a little chocolate. Then there’s some sour fruit and liquorice, and a lot of peppery spice. The pine is quite muted behind this. Slightly sticky and sweet at first, but this is balanced by a dry and mildly bitter finish. It’s a decent beer, but I actually preferred the standard Conqueror (although I had that on cask and this in bottle, so maybe it’s not a fair comparison).
