This English Special Bitter is our “Special Ale.” Special because it is one of only a handful of canned microbrews in the nation. Special because the Galena hops and pale ale malts create a crisp first sip, a hoppy tongue, and a malty sweet finish. Though “bitter” is part of the name, “better” would be a more accurate term.
Fresh and lively, this canned beer suits the needs of any outdoor enthusiast. Like it says on the can: Fish, Luau, Golf, Raft, Toboggan. Ska can!

355ml can from Appellation Wines. Pours amber with a thin but attractive head. The nose has a fairly faint hint of ginger biscuits. The taste has toffee, some biscuits then toffee again. The palate is medium bodied and crispy in texture but still quite clean and refreshing. Overall, my co-drinkers think it would become cloying but I disagree.

33cl can from Utobeer drunk at home watching Falcons vs Saints recorded from Thursday night. Clear deep orange colour with thick off white head. Aroma of some fruit and some pepper. It has that 2 row malt thing that when American brewers try to do an English style, just means it comes over a little too much toffee, metallic. Hops are ok. Just the malt isn’t quite right. Carbonation and finish are both fine. Just that toffee thing and teh malts aren’t to my taste.

Can from Cotteridge Wines; pours dark amber minimal head, quite hoppy aroma for an ESB. The taste has floral hops with sweet malts not quite balanced for. OK beer though convenient for can format would be good for school trips.

355 ml can @ Haket. Pours clear deep golden with a big frothy offwhite head that slowly dissipates while leaving some thick lacing on the glass. Smell is subtle, sweet and slightly malty with sweet bread, orange zest, hay, cereal, caramel, dry wood and hints of overripe plums and butterscotch. Taste is sweet and malty with sweet white bread, golden syrup, orange zest, artificial sweeteners, pine, cereal and hints of dry wood and overripe tropical fruits. Mouthfeel is round, tiny sticky sweet and light to medium bodied. Finish is sweet and tiny bitter with bread, pine, orange zest, sweeteners, toffee and hints of wood. Not a fan.
