This year's 8th anniversary is, like all previous Stone Anniversary Ales, an adaptation of a previous Stone Brewing Co. release. This year we set out to make an "Anniversary-ized" version of Lee's Mild, a limited-release beer from 1999. For this beer we used some of the same malts that we had used in Lee's Mild, added more hops, less water (to bring the alcohol content up), and found a tasty balance of toasty/roastiness from the malt and a subtle (by Stone standards!) hop presence. To add further complexity, oak was employed to round out the character and give the beer a bit of vanilla/bourbon influence from the wood.

Bottled (thanks jjpm74!). Reddish amber colour, small beige head. Aroma is bready toffeeish along with some winelike notes. Oak and vanilla as well. Some slight alcohol. Flavour is raisins, bread, quite grassy along with some alcohol and spices. Has aged well!

Bottled (vintage August 2004, Vasa session). Deep ruby color, small beige head. Strong nice bready aroma with hints of raisins, bourbon and vanilla. Very portwineous palate, this beer has aged well. Bready, slightly hoppy, some raisins and caramel, touch of alcohol. Everything is well in balance. I believe that this beer is now in its peak.

Bottle shared by someone at Woodshop Quad. I have had the 9th and up. Thanks for sharing this. Nose of light hops, oakiness, caramel, and a vanilla note. Brown with a small beige head. Flavor with very lightly bitter and caramelly with a slight metallic note.

On tap. Interesting beer. Pours with a long lasting, off-white head covering a hazy brown body. Aroma of chocolate, molasses, cinnamon, some wood and a touch of hops. Taste is oxidation, wood, caramel and chocolate malts. Had no idea that this was supose to be a beefed up mild, but it makes sense. Creamy mouthfeel with lively bubbles.

From tap at Stone Bistro. Pours hazy brown with a lacing light tan head. Chocolate dense aroma. Light breadish, caramel/chocolate in the initial flavour. Followed by a mild hops presence. Smooth and hoppy finish with a lingering chocolate malt flavour.

Clear, light brown body. Small tan head that vanishes. Variety of aromas and tastes, especially chocolate, cherries and licorice. Notes of leather and earth, raisins and roasted malt. The flavor is more hoppy bitter than sweet. Some oxidation. Medium body and somewhat watery texture. Dry finish. Good, but a little muddled.

Bottle. Pours a dark amber colour with a small off-white head. Roasted malty hoppy aroma. Dry malty caramel flavor with hints of chocolate. Dry malty hoppy finish.

Poured brownish with off white head. Aroma of sweet maltiness, toffee and a whiff of hops. The taste is dominated by a couple layer of malt: sweet, roasty, biscuit like and maple syrup. A certain fruitiness and hop bitterness rounded out the flavor for me.

22 oz bomber - Pours dark reddish brown with a moderate, lasting head that leaves some nice lacing. The aroma is dominated by roasted malts. The flavor is heavily malted with mild hops presence. The finish is fairly clean with some nice hops kicking in and some pleasantly warming alcohol. This is an amped up brown ale. The flavor and the alcohol are much stronger. It was very good, though I would have liked a bit stronger hops presence, especially from a Stone ale.

Poured a dark and hazy reddish brown with minimal off white head that doesnt stick around for long. Has a pleasent aroma of caramel, roasted malt and hops. Flavor is roasted malts, some dark fruit sweetness, and some chocolate and caramel. Finishes long with light bitterness (not like most Stone’s) and the roasted malt that lingers and lingers. Has a nice medium body with a fairly crisp feel to it. Not what I was expecting from Stone, but a tasty brew none the less.
