Imperial IPA Aged in Bourbon Barrels

Doom may be impending but that doesn’t mean you have to fear it. A collision of worlds, the intense hop character of our imperial IPA mingles with the warm vanilla and oak notes imparted from time spent in our favorite bourbon barrels. Like all good things, Doom comes to those who wait.

Bottle from my brother. Can’t believe the low ratings. This is top notch. Glowing orange copper body initial two fingers fluffy head subsides to tightly beaded cap. Nice mellow aroma of citrus and mats yield little clue to what comes next. Taste explodes on the tongue, orange peel, Bourbon notes, sweet malt, butterscotch. More woody Bourbon notes waft up on the finish, kind of boozy, gentle warmth. This is really well crafted, and the barrel aging dances cheek to cheek with the lovely IIPA. Damn near perfect.

Pretty good example of the style, but it’s really starting to hit home just how horrible the IIPA style is. I mean, at first it was cool to have beers that were hopped beyond belief, but all those hops, with all that booze and heavy body. As Moxie is to soda, IIPA is to beer. So anyway, a big snoot full of citrus and resiny hops at the nose, flavor chewy with the resiny hops, heavy bready/caramel malts, quite bitter at finish but the malts are strong enough to give it balance, if you call a beer this big balanced, which it isn’t, really.
