Taster at Elizabeth Station. Pours a slightly hazy golden with a white head. Aroma is caramel, malty, hoppy, slightly sweet, barrel notes. Taste is similar, very pleasant. Quite strong bitter aftertaste. Very nice.

(12.4% ABV according to my bottle.) So much out of whack with this beer, as if everything in a mid-2000s West Coast IPA has been turned up to eleven for no reason other than, fuck it, why not? Oh so hoppy, with a clingy, resinous, nigh-impenetrable bitterness, yet this IBU onslaught doesn’t mesh well with the syrupy front end or the deep bourbon vein that flows through the middle of the pint. Caramel, vanilla, maple, molasses, and jigger after jigger of bourbon make up the front half, while the finish delves into pine-and-sandpaper hop madness, with a woodsy oak backbone leading to that IBU-driven fade. Follows the pattern of most post-Mahou San Miguel Founders beers, where restraint is cast aside for big, almost unbearably over-the-top flavors. Doom, indeed.

12 oz bottle pours a clear rich amber with a dense light tan head. Big toasted malt and mellow Phillip Nye hop note. This is a malty DIPA with rich caramel malts and the heavzy palate is nicely balanced with just the right hop bitterness. The Bourbon Barrel is subtle and adds the perfect hint Terrific

Bottle from Liquor Barn. Pours a deep, glowing copper with a finger of creamy foam. Lots of vanilla cream in the nose, oak, pine and booze. Boozy from the mid-palate. Hot finish with some sherry-like creaminess, more pine and caramel throughout. Bitter and boozy finish. 750 ml bottle a gift from bytemysis. Nose is mango, pineapple, oaky vanilla, and light bourbon notes. Hazy orange with a medium lightly lacing off white head. Flavor is light bitterness, tropical fruits, vanilla, and bourbon. Pretty tasty stuff.

750 ml bottle into snifter, bottled in March 2013. Pours fairly hazy bright orange color with a 1-2 finger dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, orange peel, vanilla, toffee, oak, bourbon, light honey, floral, grass, light pine, and floral/oak earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/tropical hops, bourbon barrel, and pale malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, orange peel, floral, grass, vanilla, toffee, bourbon, oak, light honey, light pine, and floral/oak earthiness. Good amount of pine/oaky bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, orange peel, floral, grass, vanilla, toffee, bourbon, oak, light honey, light pine, and floral/oaky earthiness on the finish for a while. Awesome complexity and balance of citrus/tropical hops, bourbon barrel, and pale malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very smooth and fairly creamy/sticky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is an awesome barrel aged DIPA with age. All around great complexity and balance of citrus/tropical hops, bourbon barrel, and pale malt flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

This didn’t work for me, too much stuff going on that doesn’t really work together to make an enjoyable beer. That has to be taken into account when designing a beer, do the flavors help or hurt each other, and is there a flavor profile you are trying to make. Barrel aged IPA or DIPA’s inherently to not work, the caramel bourbon flavor from the barrel cuts out the hop character and combines to make something that doesn’t satisfy either palate.
