Imperial IPA Aged in Bourbon Barrels
Doom may be impending but that doesn’t mean you have to fear it. A collision of worlds, the intense hop character of our imperial IPA mingles with the warm vanilla and oak notes imparted from time spent in our favorite bourbon barrels. Like all good things, Doom comes to those who wait.

Draught at Harry's Hofbrau in the RC. Copper-orange with moderate retained head. The alcohol here is massively cloying and taste follows through with massive malt.

Bottle from SB. Pours amber with a White head that leaves a fair bit of lacing. Floral, perfumy with some citrus, vanilla, pine needles and loads of bourbon. Loads going on. Boozy, but it works.

Taster pour at Powder Keg Beer and Chili Festival. Appearance is hazy light brown with light sparkle, finger-width fluffy white head, light lace. Aroma is dominant bourbon, lightly herbal and resin notes, which I don't find go that great together. Taste is dominated by the bourbon, but also a light herbal quality. Definitely a sipper. Palate is medium bodied with slippery, slick texture, soft-to-average carbonation and bourbon-laden, sweet finish. Overall, the bourbon is so dominant that you can't really taste much beer--and what remains of the greatness of Double Trouble is not complemented but transmogrified. In general, I don't find the bourbon complements hoppier beers that well, so this is no surprise. A relative miss for Founders.

12 oz bottle from Founders for review. Bottled in April, rated in October. Pours a dark gold color, with a head that hangs around pretty long for an imperial beer. Smell is already a bit medicinal, with alcohol pushing the flavor of the malt over a slightly bitter hop nose. Taste has hop bitterness up front, though. Nothing piney or fruity, just some sharp bittering with nobles and maybe some Cascade. Alcohol just seems to push up the flavor of the beer rather than making itself known. Not much bourbon character, but the barrel aging gives it a very strong oaky character.

Big offwhite head doesn't last. Clear deep coppery still body. Deep tropical fruit and perfumy vanilla aroma. Dry-sweet perfumy vanilla and spicy tropical fruit taste with wooden caramel notes. Full-bodied. Sharpish, low carbonation mouthfeel. Dry spicy resiny toffee aftertaste with peppery perfumy vanilla finish. It's quite nice, but that bourbon flavour feels a bit artificial. I know it's not, but what matters is whether it tastes artificial, and it does. Not a bad beer, but not great, either. (0.355l bottle, from wine monopoly, Strømmen.)

Flaska från SB. Tack Daniel! Smak och doft av trä, tallkåda, bourbon, vanilj, ek, besk citrusmarmelad. Mycket bourbon men den tål det, värmande och kryddig alkohol. Komplex och kompakt, fina aromer i bra balans, god beska.

From a 355ml bottle on 27/9/2017. Pours a clear dark golden with a big white foamy head. There's lots of bourbon on the nose, against a backdrop of sweet malt and fruity hops.Take a sip, and there's lots of sweetness - caramel, peach, apricot and honey, and some oak and vanilla. Then the bourbon and general booziness makes and appearance, followed by some big resiny hops. The palate is syrupy and the carbonation moderate. I'm not a huge fan of barrel aged stuff but this works rather well. While a touch boozy, it's still ridiculously easy drinking for 12.4%. A terrific big beer.
