Teaming up with Schmaltz Brewing for the first time, Terrapin Beer Co. returns for a third year as a production partner for Reunion ’11. We brew Reunion each year in memory of our dear friend and partner in this venture - Virginia MacLean. Virginia lost her battle with Multiple Myeloma in 2007. It was her wish that we continue to raise finds and awareness on behalf of The Institute for Myeloma & Bone Cancer Research (www.imbcr.org).
This year’s beer is a dark, complex ale brewed with cocoa nibs, vanilla and chili peppers. It was inspired by a fantastic dessert that we used to share with Virginia at our favorite restaurant. This brown ale leads with a sweet and subtle spicy aroma. The flavor begins with complex malt overtones and quickly gives way to a chocolate and vanilla mix of satisfying bliss. Just when you thought it was over, the heat from the chilies sneaks in and coats your tongue with tantalizing heat.

Tap at the ColLAboration Winterfest 2012, as "Schmaltz Reunion, 7.3%". It pours very dark brown, with a thin beige head. The nose is spice, cocoa, sweet, sticky fruit, alcohol and molasses. The taste is spice, caramel, roasted malt, coffee, some alcohol warmth, wood, sweet sticky fruit, molasses and fiery gingerbread. Good balance of flavours. Full body and moderate carbonation. An interesting and well put together brew.

Bottle 22fl.oz.Clear dark brown colour with a average to large, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, beige head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, roasted, caramel, chocolate. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet and light to moderate bitter with a long duration, chocolate, dark chocolate, cacao. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20120202]

Dark brown pour with a tall, long lasting, thick tan head. Malty caramel aroma. The flavor is sweet and rich. Malt and nuts, this heads into Scotch Ale territory a little. The additives don’t stand out on their own; they just sort of add their complexities here and there where they are hard to pick out. Enjoyable beer. Oh, and did I mention that about ten minutes after you think you’ve got this beer figured out, you notice a pleasant, slightly fiery tingle in your mouth from the peppers.

Aroma: The nose is toffee, caramel, chocolate, oak, vanilla, and a little roast
Appearance: This one pours a cloudy brownish-orange color with a small beige head
Flavor: The taste is mid-sweet, heavy malty, brown sugar, and a little bit of pepper on the finish
Palate: The body is medium, it has an average carbonation, a slightly stick feel, and a touch of heat
Overall Impression: This is a nice combination offering from Terrapin and HeBrew, and a pretty interesting beer, that I found it to be fairly enjoyable.

22 fl oz bottle. Pours hazy dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma is roasted dark malty and caramelish. Vanilla and caramelish. Sweet, light bodied and toffee caramelish. Sweet and caramelish into the finish. Bitter and sweet toffee malty finish.

Bottle 65 cl. Courtesy of bu11zeye. Pours a clear brown with a reddish hue and a rough beige. Sweet caramel nose with some sweet milk chocolate. Medium body, very sweet cocoa with a slightly fruity edge. A little malt bitterness. 020212

Bomber shared by Butters at the 17th Richmond Ratebeer Gathering, 1/28/12. Pours a clear copper color with a medium sized creamy tan head. Decent head retention. Aroma of dates, dark fruits, chocolate and citrus. The taste is chocolate, cocoa powder, chili peppers and dark fruits. Medium bodied. Decent but I prefer the Schmaltz version.

22oz bottle-Natifest courtesy Dutch’s owners Jay & Pam-pours a tight tan head and mahogany color. Aroma is dark malt-cocoa. Taste is dark malt-cocoa, vanilla, hint of hops. Chile is slight in there, in the after taste and then slightly builds over the next few minutes.
