Porter Brewed with Northern Michigan Sweet Black Cherries

Dark, velvety, sweet, and toasty. Black Cherry Porter entered the Short’s-iverse as part of our Imperial Beer Series in 2007. We coulda dumped black cherry puree into a light, refreshing beer, but Joe had an itch for something more robust. The deep, rich flavors of an Imperial Porter are the perfect compliment to our regions national export, and Black Cherry Porter was made and quickly became a Pub favorite.

Courtesy of markwise. Pours deep dark brown with ruby edges and dark tan head. The aroma is dusty malt balls, some roasted malts, sweet black licorice and floral hops. The taste has modest levels of cherries mixing with sweet black licorice and burnt malts heading into plenty of dark cherry fruitiness from midway and into the finish.

Bottled. Quite much black colour (if not black, atleast extremely deep ruby/amber/brown opaque), with a small off-white head. Aroma is caramel malts, roasted malts, strong liquorice some wet smoked wood as well as some fruits, vanilla and slightly sour dark berries. Flavour is rather much the same in a very nice balance. Smooth and rather easy to drink for still being quite close to 9 % abv.

Draft @ O Duffy’s, Kalamazoo. Great looking brewk with black colour, brown head. Aroma of coffee, chocolate and roasted malts. Flavour is bitter coffee, roasted malts, some cherry. Light bodied, could use a bit more depth.

750ml. Dark brown body, almost black. The head is frothy and tan, but disappears quickly. Inviting aroma of roasted malts just bordering on burnt, chocolate and husky grain. Less dominating, but there is black cherry. The flavor is moderately to heavily sweet and lightly bitter and lightly acidic. The finish turns moderately bitter and moderately sweet. Medium body with a watery texture and moderate carbonation. Tastes of slightly burnt malts compliment the not-so-overwhelming cherry flavor. Shorts beers, if nothing else, are creative and interesting. Nice blend of flavors.

(Bottle, 0.75 l, at Pikkulintu, Helsinki, on 2009-04-04 -- shared with sayravai and isos, thanks!) Black. Medium sized tan coloured head. Aniseed, roastedess and lighlty cherries in aroma. Full bodied, bit oily and dry palate with medium carbonation. Roastedness, little bit of liquorice, ash, little bit of cherries, bitternessa and hint of sweetness in taste. Strong ashiness in aftertaste.

Sample at O-town throwdown ’09 Pours black with beige head and thin golden lacing. Aroma was actually weak in cherry. Taste, roasted malts, finish with black cherries on the palate. Malt profile is well present with light notes of hops to balance it out. Was expecting a lot more cherries, but a decent porter overall. --- Beer aliased from original tick of Black Cherry Porter: Imperial on 16 Aug 2009 at 12:19 - Score: Appearance - 6 | Aroma - 7 | Flavor - 8 | Texture - 8 | Overall - 8. Original review text: courtesy of the Shorts tasting night group. early ’07 bottle. bottle#622 pours deep black with mahogany head. Aroma some tart cherries with hints of chocolate. Flavor, chocolate and malts with black cherries, medium carbonation with a thin watery body. Cherries might come out a little too much. The porter aspect gets a little lost in the amount of black cherries used in this beer.

Thanks to Rogueone for sharing a bottle (#479): This beer pours thoroughly black with a thin light brown head that recedes slowly. Spotty sheet of lacing on the glass. The nose is malty with a dark cherry and chocolate undertone. Medium-bodied with flavors of dark chocolate cherry bon bons, coffee and malt. The finish is burnt malt and cherries with a mildly bitter coffee aftertaste. Very enjoyable overall.

Black with a small off-white head. Licorice and roast malt aroma. Dry and smooth roasted flavour. It has a peculiar refreshing fruity quality, but nothing I’d have picked as cherry in a blind tasting. Very pleasant beer.

Thanks to mibirder for this - dark ruby, nearly black beer, with a soapy tan lace - strongly roasty aroma, with moderate tart cherries and some tobacco - creamy mouthfeel - dry, roasty, almost smoky flavor - unlike the aroma, the cherry is very hard to pick out, but the char, tobacco and smoke come through quite a bit - as it warms, the cherries become a bit more noticeable, and add a slight tannic quality - pretty nice, but not at all what I was expecting.
