Tap at Kult Groningen. Hazy light golden with big white head. Soft dough, banana, dried herbs, light grass, pils malts, cloves. Light sweet and under medium bitter. Under medium bodied with watery feel. It’s not bad but too watery for me.

Minimal head, hazy pale. Nice fruity aroma. Wheat malt sweet, no bitter. Thin texture, light body.

Basically the new name and label of Limburgs Land Ur-Weizen, as this beer has been put under their organic ’Ur’-label now. Conceived as a Hefeweizen, seen the use of malted wheat and German hops (Hallertau) as well as the absence of spices. Medium thick, eggshell white, moussy head with decent retention, but not as ’fluffy’ and creamy as in most German Weissbiere; cloudy peach blonde robe with somewhat greenish hue and some tiny bubbles piercing through here and there. Aroma of soggy sandwiches, soapy wheat, white bread crumbs, the expected mashed banana ester and clove phenol but less outspoken than in its German counterparts, field flowers, vague but effectively refreshing hint of lemon zest, some cooked potato earthiness, dried grass, green apple, zucchini, sour cream somewhere. Fruity flavour, dominated by banana of course but also hints of pear, pineapple and peach, sweetish and softly sourish, further accentuated by the mellow, basic sourishness of the wheat malt, supple and light body with medium, but still initially somewhat ’stingy’ carbonation becoming softer after a while; bready barley is mixed well with the sourish wheat, finish becomes even more bready due to yeastiness, with a deep, brief, earthy hop touch all the way at the back, effecting limited bittering power as is to be expected from this style; retronasally, the clove phenol returns, more so than the banana ester. Crisp, almost faintly lemony sourishness remains after swallowing, making this quite a refreshing, quenching wheat beer. In all, indeed quite German in profile, but then there is a certain amount of German influence in both Dutch and Belgian Limburg, at least when it comes to older, traditional breweries like this one; it does lack a bit of the rich ’fluffiness’ of the best of Bavarian Hefeweizens though, and if tasted blind, I’d probably associate this more with the more northern German (and historically more recent) interpretations of this historical style, which tend to be a bit more ’clean’ and less phenolic. I can appreciate a decent Hefeweizen every now and then and this to me is a pleasant and well-made example of the style, standard as it may be. Enjoyed it.
