This is a creamy, full bodied malty brew, satisfyingly rich with distinct caramel and coffee notes. A combination of crystal and roasted malts give the stout its deep, dark flavour topped of with a creamy, thick tan head. Unlike some stouts, it isn’t overly bitter due to careful use of traditional English hop varieties in the brewhouse.

Winner of the CAMRA Winter Beer festival in Derby 2013. In WW2 Ratliffe’s Stout was sent out as a gift by Phipps to the Northamptonshire Regiment who were a part of the Desert Rats and they continued to supply the regiment as they fought through North Africa and Italy.

Handpull cask at the Albion Brewery Tap, Northampton. Reddish brown with a small loose off-white head. Leather smell with some chocolate fudge and biltong. Sweet taste with savoury meaty overtones. Light, almost watery palate. A Sunday lunch stout, bold in its originality but maybe not my cup of tea.

Bottle at Fin & Loz’s tasting with Jan, Charlotte, Craig, Stella & kids consumed Saturday 22.10.11 I picked this up somewhere? Bit thin in the mouth but with some light spent coffee grains, its ok but falls a little bit down when compared to some similar in style. Dark brown in colour with a light beige head. Bottle. Black beer with a strong but soon disappearing head. The aroma is lightly roasted, and the flavour is roasted and mildly bitter with a sweetish edge. Overall a nice beer but more akin to a mild than a standard stout.
