Bottle. Marked at 6.5% alcohol by volume. Normal Drakes plastic label...I need to buy more of this cause it makes the bottles extremely easy to reuse when removing the labels. Pours with a nice light khaki, creamy head with light laced bubbles. Body is a murky amber nearly wooden hue. Good lace and more than acceptable retention. Aroma is citrus hops, caramel, toasted grains and some sort of slight off flavor I can’t put my finger on (sort of a plastic or rubber smell). Taste is okay, but a bit bland. I don’t know how old my bottle is, but the hops are gone. Slight hint of pine but that is it. Some caramel, toast and ever so light diacetyl. Still a very good amber despite its main attraction being to faded to really notice. Nice and full body for a amber, medium carbonation. Not bad, but not as good as I was expecting.

Bottle from Pizza Port Carlsbad. The beer is a dark rusty brown color with a medium and foamy beige head that dissipates slowly. Patches of lacing on the glass. The aroma is roasty with notes of malt and nuts, plus some hops. Rich and roasty with flavors of sweet malt, wood and nuts. Nice flavorful hops in the background throughout. The finish is malty and chocolatey with a lingering hops aftertaste. Right up there with the best Ambers I have ever tried. Drake’s continues to impress.

Hazy dark amber colour. Toasty malts with big woody hops, hint of citrus. Rich heavy woody hops, toasty, caramelly malts...it’s a thick wall of earthiness. Big body, as ambers go. The thing is, a dark IPA can be a wonderful brew but only if there’s a sense of purpose to the way the malt character and hop character are combined.

Amber-mahogany colored body is mostly clear, yielding a deep beige head that is well-retained and laces lightly.
Bold hops in the nose are fruity and floral, with not too much citrus and just enough pine dryness. Curnchy, earthen malts sit in the background and I almost think I smell some coffee-like character from them. Definitely a bit of caramel and a very distinguished woodiness on the finish. But back to the hops....very lovely and lacking the annoying bitterness that so often comes with this level of hop character. No alcohol, no flaws.
A lot more bitterness than expected in the flavor, and though it’s not a resinous or heavy acidity, it’s still creates a lot of dryness that the medium/dark malts arent able to soak up fully, leaving it somewhat bready/crusty and nearly astringent on the end. Fortunately some honey and caramel come through with warming, to give it some sweetness and depth, while the hops get juicier. Good and interesting, though as with their IPA, I must admit I don’t usually care for the mix of strong PNW hops and medium/dark malts. Carbonation is a bit loose at times, no alcohol or flaws noted.

Aroma of piney, resiny hop. Way hoppy. Reddish amber color with a beige head that fills the glass. This stuff seems to be alive. Starts a bit thin with resin hop, followed by some bittersweet malt. That evergreen aspect just won’t leave. This is an amber? There is a lot of dark malt flavor, but the hop tends to overbalance. Hop wins. Finish is grutchy memories of malt and a good hoppy bitterness. Huah! Memorably good.
