Nice clear dark brown appearance with thick fluffy head. Aroma is initially sulphuric. After a while it dissipates somewhat. Then it has nutty malts. Also in the taste. Rather thin and watery.

Bottle:Clear, chestnut-amber coloured, mid-sized and relatively quickly collapsing off-white head; flavours of burnt malt and a certain tartness in the nose, accompanied by mild traces of fruits and toasted malt; mild sweetish-bitterish flavour, very light bodied; short and thin - sweetish malty finish with a molecular bitterness in the aftertaste. Cheap taste, but still drinkable...

During Jan 2012 I decided on a German beer evening: a 500ml bottle of this beer was taken during that evening, the only Alt I had at the time. It had 2 months of its ‘Best Before Life’ remaining when I poured it into three stumpy Alt glasses. Clear almost chestnut brown body with a swiftly disappearing white head on each glass. The smells were from the malt world, caramel and some roasted/toasted notes although the overriding malt aromas were fairly sweet. The taste carries on with the malt flavours picked up in the nose: caramel sweet with more robust malty hints in the background. The hops do make a mini stand towards the end of each sip, not bringing any bitterness but just showing enough to stop the beer being overly sweet. This is on the thin side for an Alt, lacked depth of body, but still pleasant enough and easy to drink.

Bottle 500ml. @ home.Clear medium brown amber colour with a large, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white to light brown head. Aroma is moderate malty, roasted, light caramel, medicine notes. Flavour is moderate to light light heavy sweet and moderatee bitter with a long duration, roasted, hops, salty, chocolate - cacao notes, malt extract notes. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20110906]

Mild malziger Antrunk mit süßen Beinoten. Im Mittelteil getreidiger, dafür sind die anderen Aromen nun deutlich milder. Etwas trocken, langweilig. Nun wässrig, noch wenig malzig. Muss sowas sein? 8/6/6/6/7/6

(bottle) Clear, chestnut colour with a big and slightly tanned foamy head. Strawy and slightly ashy malty aroma with notes of sour dough and grassy, also slightly sweaty hops. Mildly bitter-sweet flavour, light to medium bodied with a moderate carbonation. Slim malty, slightly ashy and nutty base with grassy and slightly herbal hops, accompanied by notes of burnt caramel and sour dough; slim and slightly bitter finish with grassy hoppy notes. Lacks some delicate fruit-character and furthermore almost everything I expect from a good Alt from the Lower Rhine area. 09.V.11

The crown development is ok, but nothing more. Sweet breath, back out, it is dry, so overall quite distinctive, and the whole thing. Predicate: drinkable

Bottle. As Original Königshofer Alt, 5% abv. It pours a clear, golden body under a finger-thick off-white head. Some dms on the nose, grainy with fruits and bready notes. Caramel and bread in the flavor, some fruity hops and a suiting bitterness. Quite fizzy mouthfeel, medium body fullness. Fine bitterness in the finish, but also a metallic touch. A decent altbier, but nothing worth travelling for. 091007
