A renowned beer from a recipe passed down by the Roberts family who owned the brewery for several generations; a pale-straw-coloured, premium bitter with simple, light malty-sweetness, delicately balanced with light bitterness of floral, earthy character.

Bottle from Hop Vault, Stourbridge, online. Pours a clear gold with small white head, some retention. Aroma is sweet, biscuit, bread, grassy hops. A bit like a few craft lagers I've had. Taste starts sweet with a decent bready malt character, then the hops give a floral-resin, light fruitiness and good grassy crisp bitterness in the finish. Light bodied, refreshing, clean and crisp like a good pilsener! Good.

A very solid go to pale ale, pours a lovely pale gold with a frothy white head and a semi-sweet light biscuity aroma. Smooth and easy drinking, it's nicely fruity and a little bitter, with some floral hop character poking through too.

Cask at the Craven Arms, Birmingham. Poured a clear golden colour with a lasting frothy white head and some clingy lace. The aroma is big grainy ovaltine malt. The flavour is moderate to light bitter, with a smooth, earthy, malty, light floral, woody hop bitter palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. An awesome bitter and very sessionable.

Cask at Shrewsbury Arms, Stafford. Pours a chrome yellow with a small foamy white head and good lacing. Grass and straw in the aroma with hints of malts as well. In the mouth the initial impression of fruitiness and a creamy texture. Later you become aware of the malt led base and discern stewed apples, peaches and apricots together with some floral hops. Finish is mainly malts. Not a bad beer by any means.
