Black, no head, gravity dispense
Aroma of dark malts, ginger, no roast, gingerbread, simple
Taste of dark malts, sweet ginger, touch savoury, no roast, quite simple
Palate - Medium body, light sweet. Finish as main flavour
Overall - Maybe gravity dispense didn’t do this beer justice

Cask at the Watford Beer Festival 2013. Poured a very, very dark ruby with a thin, tan head. Aroma of root ginger, roasted malt and molasses. Pretty full mouth feel. Liquorice flavour initially with notes of treacle and fiery ginger. Palate was coffee, burnt sugar, light spice and dark fruit. Nice effort; the ginger had put me off trying this variant in the past, however it was subtle and tasted like actual ginger, rather than the sugary, crystallised stuff.

(Cask at Gallows Bird Real Ale Festival ’13) The beer poured very dark brown. Its head was small and lightly brown. Aroma had roasted malts, chocolate and ginger. Palate was quite full bodied with low carbonation. Flavours were roasted malts, chocolate, ginger, sweetness and bitterness. Aftertaste was roasty and bitter. The ginger and the roasted malts were combined nicely.

Pours pitch black with no head. Aroma of ginger, ripe fruits, some roastiness and malts. Taste is smooth with hints of ginger, some roastiness, licorice and syrupy notes. Finish is spicy with ginger notes, some roastiness and malty notes. Okay, quite spicy stout.

50cl bottle from Westholme Stores, Goring. Deep mahogany in colour with an attractive cherry red gleam, and a tight tan head; aroma of crystalised stem ginger; smooth and full-bodied with a thick chocolate body that wraps itself around the spicy ginger - just like a chocoalte ginger in fact; the finish is dry and lightly ginger with some underlying coffee grounds. A rather elegant stout that doesn’t overdo the ginger, but makes sure that its presence is felt.

Gravity dispense at Windsor Locale festival - 22/07/12. Pours a rich deep brown colour about 80% towards black with a thin tan head. Roasted malts on the nose and a big whiff of ginger, a little spice in the background. Taste is all on the roasted malt and ginger allied to coffee and chocolate in the background. Medium body, minimal carbonation, well balanced.
