Victor Ale lets us blur the lines between brewer and vintner. The brew begins by mashing Pilsner malt with locally grown red grapes. It’s then hopped with Hallertau. The beer is fermented first with a strain of wine yeast, then finished with Belgian abbey-style yeast. Victor Ale presents a pale copper hue, medium body, a pronounced vinous character, and a spicy, tart finish. Its beer sibling is Victoria, which uses chardonnay grapes, but is otherwise identical.

A portion of the proceeds of Victor goes to St. Lawrence Arts Center, located on Munjoy Hill in Portland. Built in 1897 by Arthur Bates Jennings, this National Historic Landmark is an affordable and accesible venue for art, community enrichment, and a piece of local history. 750ml bottle-pours a foamy off white head and hazy amber color with effervescence. Aroma is yeasty, light malt, light fruit. Taste is yeasty, light malt, light fruit-grapes/plum, dry, spices-pepper/coriander. Good effervescence. Occasional.

The cork sniffed red wine. The ale aroma is vinous, but not particulary red. Copper color with a white head that reduced rapidly. Medium body with fizzy/creamy carbonation. The flavor is tart, almost alum, could be wood, with cooked stone fruit aspects. The bitter could be oak. Perhaps some red grape skins. The finish is almost astringent, and the wood gets oaky. So where’s the malt? I think it blended into all the other pieces. This is really good stuff, but there is a note that could suggest plastic, but organic chemicals can appear anywhere. I think the dominating character is the oaky woody thing.

Hazy amber beer with a cream colored head. Grape juice aroma with a bit of yeast and sweetness. Fruity flavor with a bit of caramel and yeast. Grape juice lingers with some spice and yeast. Medium body. Better than Victoria, but it also gets old quickly.

From bottle, blind tasting at Papsoes - beer no 17. Pours hazy orange with a diminised white head. Slight acidic, orange peel and soft malty with a slight spiced whiff. Flavour holds a very mild roasted malt flavour, a subdued brett note and slight fruity hoppy too. Finish ends in a flemish sour like note, quite mild though.

(Bottle 75 cl) Courtesy of kramer17801. Hazy, amber golden with a small, off-white head. Sweetish, fruity nose. Medium body with lightly sweet caramel and fruit. A light tartness and a light bitterness. Unusual but not unpleasant. 021107

Tap at Mug’s Split Thy Skull - cloudy straw color, with an impressive, lasting head - very musty, earthy aroma, with a fair amount of sour fruit (mostly pears and apples) and grapes (of course) - tart up front, with some white wine and yeast qualities - this is followed by the sweetness of overripe apples - light grain character - like Clark states, the grape.wine character dominates, but I enjoyed it because of this - something different.
