This is the first installment of our steel battalion series. This big, bold stout was brewed using chipotle peppers and dark specialty malt that lends the flavors of dark chocolate and dark fruit. The Belgian yeast adds hints of esters to this well balanced beer. Smoke and mild heat add to the complexity as well. Surprisingly drinkable and well-balanced.

Bottled. Deep brown black pour. Roasted malts and chili spice. Pretty decent and not as fierce as you’d expect.

Keg at Spacebar, 4/6/15. Clear dark brown, thin creamy off-white head, decent retention. Aroma of chipotle, chocolate, mild roasted malts and soy. The taste is roasted malts, chocolate, chipotle, dark fruit. Medium bodied, low carbonation, mild building heat, well balanced.

Anise, prune, charcoal nose. Black, thick tan head, fair retention. Charcoal, dark roast malt, plums. Anise and prune on the back. Medium body, soft carbonation, alcohol well concealed. Subtle, but flavorful with good complexity and excellent balance. Quite an elegant beer.
