Belgian Style - Strong Ale Regular|

Intensely fruity and complex Belgian-style ale. This special beer is a brewing art from start to finish. A full mash tun of malted barley is required to reach the high gravity required for this style, along with a high percentage of special classic Belgian-style malt. Noble hops are added sparingly to the kettle. During the long boil special kettle sugars are added in the Belgian Tradition which lends to unique flavors in the fermenter. A classic Belgian yeast strain is pitched and the long fermentation is monitored closely as the flavors develop. The beer is then chilled and aged before being kegged and bottled.

Bottle, about 1 year old. Soft mellow malt aroma with honey, stewed peaches and apples, alcohol, and a touch of miso and meat pie! Deep amber color with lace. Big fruit flavor, stewed, with peaches, ginger, orange, alcohol. Like fruit stewed in brandy. Nicely rounded complexity. Tasty though a bit too sweet and boozy.

Bottle 35,5 cl. Courtesy of scrizzz. Pours a clear amber with a small off-white head. Sweet overripe fruit, yeast and phenols in the nose. Solid body, carbonation is a little low, overripe fruit, brown sugar, yeast and phenols. The heavy alcohol is surprisingly well hidden. Big Belgians just don’t really do it for me anymore. 220611

On tap at The Taphouse, pours clear amber with a small head. Aroma of sweet caramel, candied sugar and some sweet dried fruits. Flavour is cloying in its sweetness, with candied sugar, plum and raisins. This is too sweet - glad this was only a 6 oz. sample.

25th October 2008. Hazy brown beer. Sweet slightly spicy dry stout. A little fruit in the mid but lots of candy dries it out. Distinct toffee undertone and a dry fruit saccharine finish.

Pours hazy orange with hues of brown topped off by a thin white head. The aroma is full of sweet candi sugar, musty prunes, figs, mangos, dark grape jam and a bit of pepper. The taste begins with a combination of sweet candi sugar, pepper, prunes, dates, sugar dredged apricots and mango. It sort of stays that way as the experience progresses except the pepper note sort of fades away to nothing by the finish. It ends sweet and slick with lingering light dark fruitiness.
