Slam Dunkel was a small batch release in 2007. We had such an overwhelming response that we had to put it in the seasonal rotation. We also decided, as brewers, we couldn’t live without drinking this beer every year! This 7% Double Dunkelweizen is unfiltered and made with over 50% wheat malt along with pale, munich, and a touch of chocolate to give it the traditional color and flavor. Bitterness is subdued to allow the Weihenstephen yeast to shine through with those traditional notes of banana and clove. Available in June in bottles and draft. Recipe by Chris Wilson, Head Brewer.

Medium beige head. Hazy opaque deep dark red body. Deep caramelly banana aroma with roasty wheaty earthy notes. Sweet-dryish roasty banana and alcohol taste with earthy dusty notes. Fullish body. Mild, soft, smooth mouthfeel with noticeable alcohol without any discernible heat. Dryish banana and alcohol aftertaste with bready roasty rye notes. It’s nice, and with less prominent alcohol it would be great. (0.355l bottle, Ølbutikken, Copenhagen.)

Bottle. It’s an unclear, brown beer with a dense, finger-thick off-white head. Lots of banana on the nose, some caramel and a spiced hint. A bit alcoholic. That goes for the flavor too, alcohol, caramel and banana and a touch of bitterness towards the end. Well, quite bitter actually. The mouthfeel is medium to full, and it’s quite effervescent. A dunkelweizen in the higher end of the alcohol range, but quite tasteful and pleasant, not as drinkable as it should be though. 110708

Pours hazy brown with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, wheat, dried fruits and sugar. Taste is medium sweet and light bitter. Body is medium, texture is thin, carbonation is soft.

Bottle.Cloudy brown colour with small white head.Aroma of ryebread,yeast and caramel.Flavor is sweet and fruity of banana and also spicey well balance and nice finish.

Dark mahogany poor with light white head and light lace. Slow, light carbonation. Nose of light caramel, not much else. Caramel and wheat taste. Nothing like the German versions of the style. No clove, banana or bubblegum in this one. I would call it a dark wheat ale NOT a dunkleweizen. A bit of ABV in the finish. Not a bad brew just not what I was expecting.

Bottle 12fl.oz. @ home.Unclear medium to dark amber colour with a average to large, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, beige head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, caramel, moderate to heavy yeasty, fruity, banan, light to moderate phenol - yeast. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet and moderate bitter with a long tot average duration, caramel, banana - fruit, dry, light nutty, light phenol. Deep brown with a creamy tan head. Chocolate, roasty toasted malt, light molasses, brown sugar, and a mid-level banana aroma. Full, chewy body. Flavor has a real nice lightly fruity note over the chocolate, light molasses, banana, and caramel. I’d heard good things about this one but it may have surpassed even what I expected. Very well done.

I can’t help but be bitchy about this beer’s label: the beer’s name is a basketball reference, but the picture’s of a sledgehammer. I think that qualifies as a mixed metaphor. Kind of. Anyway, this beer has a great big clove-laced soul. The body feels thicker than that of a regular Dunkel, and the darker color brings forth a cashew-like taste that pretty much rocks. Smells much too bland for the deep wheat-beer flavors within. Not a classic, but good on a chilly Athens, GA evening. (1/3/09)
