Slam Dunkel was a small batch release in 2007. We had such an overwhelming response that we had to put it in the seasonal rotation. We also decided, as brewers, we couldn’t live without drinking this beer every year! This 7% Double Dunkelweizen is unfiltered and made with over 50% wheat malt along with pale, munich, and a touch of chocolate to give it the traditional color and flavor. Bitterness is subdued to allow the Weihenstephen yeast to shine through with those traditional notes of banana and clove. Available in June in bottles and draft. Recipe by Chris Wilson, Head Brewer.

bottle pours hazy brown with a tall frothy light tan head. Aroma is strong bannana, wheat and a hint of cocoa. Flavor is outstanding. Very nice chocolate malt flavor that is complemented by a nice full wheat flavor and a touch of spiced banana from the yeast. This one blew me away.....MORE PLEASE!!!

Location: On Tap at Gilly's, 12/29/09

Aroma: Smells of banana, German yeast, spice, and chocolate
Appearance: Hazy, dark orange color
Flavor: Taste is sweet, spicy, and doughy mostly
Palate: Body is medium-full with lively carbonation
Overall Impression: This is a pretty good dunkelweizen, and I like the name. I do not have a whole lot to add other then that.

Bottle: Poured a deep brown color dunkel with a nice foamy head with good retention and light lacing. Aroma of banana bread and caramel is very enticing and more enjoyable then I had expected. Taste is a nice mix between some banana ester with lightly sweet caramel and that distinctive German yeast. Body is quite full with good carbonation and no alcohol was apparent. Very well done with loads of character and some very good balance.

pours copper, off white head. Aroma and taste, dark fruits (figs), some grains; wheat, caramel. Some lingering sugary apricots and nectarine. A fairly decent weizen bock.

Bottle thanks to bu11zeye. Pours with a small, off-white head over a hazed brown body. Aroma of brown sugar, bread and a bit of chocolate. Taste is malty with some nuts, alcohol, chocolate and banana esters. Light bubbles and a creamy mouthfeel.

Bomber. Pours a dingy brown with lots of bubbles and a one finger fizzy head. Aromas are a nice enough mix of brown sugar, cloves, figs, and general yeastiness. Flavor is a pretty good mix of the sweet and yeasty stuff... brown and candi sugars are evident as are cloves... things end with a little bit of sweet fig-like fruitiness.

Draught at Brickseller, Washington DC
Cloudy dark brown color, big head. The smell reminds me sewage water. It has a solid body, but again it seems that a quite good beer (sweetness, caramel, wheat...) Has been brewed with dirty water; but it’s a pity because the beer should not be bad. Difficult.

Pours cloudy with a medium/dark brown body under a lasting tan head. Chocolate covered banana aroma reminiscent of a "Charleston Chew" Very creamy smooth and rich palate that delivers a creamy chocolate flavor with loads of banana. I’ll take another of these!
