Slam Dunkel was a small batch release in 2007. We had such an overwhelming response that we had to put it in the seasonal rotation. We also decided, as brewers, we couldn’t live without drinking this beer every year! This 7% Double Dunkelweizen is unfiltered and made with over 50% wheat malt along with pale, munich, and a touch of chocolate to give it the traditional color and flavor. Bitterness is subdued to allow the Weihenstephen yeast to shine through with those traditional notes of banana and clove. Available in June in bottles and draft. Recipe by Chris Wilson, Head Brewer.

22oz bottle-pours a rich tan head with trailing lace and murky brown with orange color. Aroma is clove, sweet medium malt-caramel, banana, some sharp wet/raw wheat, alcohol clashes a bit, doughy. Taste is boozy, which after ½ pint fades some. Clove, sweet medium malt-caramel, banana, wet/raw wheat, alcohol, some sharp/earthy hops bite.

Dark, reddish tinged, amber color with a decent beige/tan head. Aromas of banana and roasted caramel, with a possible hint of chocolate. Medium body with fizzy/creamy carbonation. Flavor is banana, dark malt, and a very light chocolate. Makes me think of chocolate covered frozen banana - except the temperature, and there’s not much chocolate here. Finish is good, and the banana turns a bit like the strings on bananas. Finally discovering some clove. Really tasty hefe.

Bottle Pours out a mudy brown topped with a sand head. Aroma of sweet pit fruit and gelg yeast. Tast a nice spice, plenty banana and more of the pit fruit. A nice brew.

Nice blue label. Big swirling pour starts out clearish brown then enter the swirling junk with chunks. If you know weyer, you know this will not be lacking in impact, and it doesn’t. Clean olfactory with hints of dragster fuel vapors. Strong on the tongue. Wheaty wheat wine beer impressions. Finsih is quite strongish and does not hide the alky well. Dizzy swishy senses after a while near end of session..... Somebody should have sent this to courtesy training school before it was released into the public. You’ll love it, quite powerful.

22 oz bottle courtesy of phillybeer2112. Pour is a nice cascading murky brown ruby with a well formed light tan head. Aroma of roasty caramel maltiness. Some soft milkiness below that. Nice nose. Taste is the nose, notably the roasty toasty caramel. Taste also introduces bittersweet fruit, apple is the closest. Some herbal and tobacco at the back of the taste as well. Palate is unfiltered, medium and satisfying. Decent level of carbonation. Nice beer, thanks for sending this my way, Dan!

Bottle from nimbleprop - Thanks! Muddy brown color reminds me of leather. Small, short lived tan head. Bubble gum and bananas dominate an otherwise spicey and fruity aroma. Tastes spices and malty with dark fruits. Less prevalent on the bananas now, more like a banana bread feel. Good.

22 oz bottle. Pours a brown color with a medium, lasting head. Aroma is banana, malt, yeast, cloves. Flavor is malty, with banana, spice, and bread. Overall it was good, but it was not as freshing as I probably was hoping - so that colored my review slightly.

Dark muddy brown with a big head. Chocolatey malt aroma with some dark fruits (grape, apple, raisin) and light bubblegum phenols. Very soft body, a little oily, with low carbonation. Slightly toasted with dark fruit. Solid, functional dessert beer and rendition of the Aventinus concept.

22 oz. bottle from Once Upon a Vine. Reddish brown with a 2-finger head. Low retention and lacing. Very banana-forward aroma with some bread, yeast and spice notes. Very earthy taste was unexpected given the aroma. Banana, clove, caramel notes as well. Full bodied. Nice beer.

22oz bomber bottle. Thick brown-red stained glass color, with just a tinge of light creeping through. Nice chocolate banana aroma. Everything really comes together well in this beer, from the smooth, rich malt base, to the classic banana-clove aroma. Impressive beer, though a good German example may still have it beat in depth.
