Deep dark brown coloured body with a thinnish off-white head, only a centimetre or so tall, which fades fast. Aroma of roasted malt, bunches of oatmeal (what a shock!), caramelised sugars, pitted fruits, light earth and a heavy dose of anise along with grapes. Light to Medium-bodied; Assertive roasted malt and pitted fruit flavours dominate with a large earthy and especially nutty flavours that show a lot of depth and a strong punch from the grain with some lighter chocolate and even coffee bitterness throughout, but the oatmeal shines through everything, in a very nice, supportive way. Aftertaste shows the softer sweetness with a coffee and chocolate finish along with some caster sugar, even a touch of icing sugar to completement the earthy and nutty notes and a dash of the oats/grain at the end that make this nice and rounded. Overall, a pungent and flavourful beer that hits the right notes and the ones you'd expect, while still being very easy-drinking and full-of-flavour. Overall, a nice and enjoyable beer throughout that is great for the style and shows a very nice pungent beer that has a lot of flavour, yet is easy-to-drink and has a great profile/body. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Shopper's Food Warehouse (final visit ever) in Alexandria (Potomac Yard) on 12-December-2019 for US$1,55 sampled at home in Washington on 13-January-2020.

Kroger bottle. Pours nearly black with a small brown head. Aroma is oats, light plastic, chocolate. Flavor is smooth chocolate, oats, lactose, toasted malt. Simple, but worth the purchase.
