Devil’s Milk is an American-style Barley Wine. This beer exhibits a wealth of fruit flavors, from pears to plums to raisins. Devil’s Milk is dry hopped (hops added after fermentation) for a strong bite that balances its big malt backbone. Served in a snifter glass because of the high abv, barley wines are perfect as a relaxing “after-dinner” drink or nitecap.

Bottle, shared by Papsoe. It pours a beautiful, clear, dark amber to copper body under a small, dense, beige head. The aroma is quite nice, a rich caramel maltyness, some beef stock and pine cones as well as a touch of alcohol. The flavor is quite sweet, with a nice bitterness, a hint of anise, a good dash of dried fruits and warming alcohol. Full-bodied and warming, finishing sweet, with a nice bitterness and dried fruits. A really nice barley wine, that’s for sure. 110416

Bottle 65 cl. Courtesy of TheCheeseMan. Pours amber with a slight haze and a small off-white head. Your typical US Barley Wine nose with hops and sweet caramel. Solid body, carbonation is a little low, sweet caramel, an oxidized note and a hoppy, minty finish. Not overly bitter. Quite a pleasant and balanced American Barley Wine. 170411

No aroma. Crystal clear copper, thin yellow head, some lacing. Full bodied and bitter. Horehound dominates with plum skins in the end. Dried leaves are also present. Quite a rustic and robust barleywine. Very bitter, but enough sweetness to make it pleasant. Not really my cup of tea though. I love a good rustic brown ale, but I prefer barleywines and pale ales with more of a citrusy character.

22 ounce bottle courtesy of a free beer contest run by GMCC2181. Thanks! Not sure how old this was when I got it, but I’ve had it 13 months, so its got some age. Also, thought this would be fitting for my 3666th rating. Pours a clear dark strawberry red with a medium tan head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of toffee, brown sugar, citrus hops. The taste is toffee, brown sugar, berries, citrus, peppery hop notes. Medium-full bodied. The hops have probably faded some, but I like that better anyway. Nice malty barleywine. This has aged well.
