A beguiling autumnal treat, brewed with Crystal and Black Malt with a generous helping of Treacle in the Whirlpool and Fermenter delivering a layer of cinder toffee over a smooth Dark Ale.

Can from House Of Trembling Madness. Dark brown body with a thick beige head. No visible carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of coffee, toffee and treacle. Flavour of nutty malt and burnt caramel. Medium body with a smooth mouthfeel. Soft fizz. Rich and tasty. On this evidence, I’d welcome treacle being used in more dark beers.

Cask @ Victorian Craft Beer Cafe, Halifax. One of their Back In Black Beer Festival beers. Clear brownish-red with a creamy-smooth light-brown head. Its treacle influence is light, infact I found some hoppiness to this dark ale, but the result was quite a smooth and easy texture to this darker coloured brew.

Cask at Wigan Central, Wigan. Pours a very dark reddish-brown with a small bream head. There’s roast malts and biscuits in the nose, plus hints of treacle. Malts to the fore again in the mouth, plus a little bitterness. Flavour has cola and liquorice to start with treacle, parkin, and hints of toffee coming through later. This is a decent dark ale.
