You don’t need to be royalty to enjoy Berkshire’s dark-as-night interpretation of the traditional Russian Imperial Stout. Rich maltiness produces hints of chocolate, licorice, toffee, and ripe, dark fruit. Its velvety texture bathes your palate in luxury, begging to be paired with a dessert or to be enjoyed as a nightcap. Suitable for drinking now, this fine ale also ages beautifully in a cool, dark place…waiting patiently to transport you to the time of the Czars.

(Bottle 65 cl) Pours a dark, opaque, orangey brown with a light brown head. Aroma of roasted malt. Medium body with lightly sweet, roasted malt, some fruit and some chocolate. Very subdued bitterness. Sort of an Impy Lite. 270607

Pours black into a snifter. Tan micro head quickly recedes with little lacing, but skims rim and surface. Liquorice, chocolate and coffee aromas. Creamy liquorice with a lasting bitter mocha finish.

Acquired via trade. Rich dark brown color with a thick dark tan head. Thick and sticky lacing. Super sweet malt and molasses aroma, along with some roasted coffee. Full-bodied with semi-sweet chocolate, malt and caramel flavors bordering on cloying - and I like my Imperial Stouts on the sweet side. It does round out pretty quickly though, with coffee and a bit of hops coming through. The finish is long and sweet with dark chocolate and coffee. Pretty enjoyable.

Deep brown body, large, puffy light tan head. Chocolatey aroma with molasses, hints of dark fruit (plum), and roasted, charred malts. Toasty body with salty, soy-like characteristics (rather like a Baltic Porter), as well as molasses, chocolate, and hints of raisins. Slight tartness on the finish. Medium-bodied, quite complex, and quite delicious. Thanks OldGrowth for the bottle!

2004 bomber. Pours a completely pitch black with a decent sized tan head. Aroma has a subtle roast, lots of chocolate malt, just tons of it. You can smell some vinous notes. Flavor is chocolatey, like chocolate milk made with hersheys syrup. I dont quite detect all of the vinousness that Joe talks about, though it is quite oily tasting. Lots of bitter licorice and some more dark chocolate on the finish. Little hops apparency. I dont mind the flavor at all, and it’s quite tasty, but the mouthfeel is a bit thin (not a surprise from these guys). Pretty velvety as billed, but just needs to pack in more flavor per sip. I find only a tiny bit of coffee beans on the finish, just a hint.
