Cask at the Kelham Island tavern, Sheffield. Malty aroma with a very bitter liqourice taste. In fact it's very bitter for a porter. That bitterness heads straight to the palate and I can't even begin to describe the aftertaste . The alcohol isn't overpowering either. 500ml bottle. Clear dark brown colour with small to average, creamy, lasting, lacing, tan head. Dark malty, minimally grainy aroma with notes of chocolate and roast, hoppy overtones. Taste is dry, roasty dark malty with subtle, minimally sweet chocolately undertones; minimally floral hoppy overtones in the finish.

500ml bottle - thin tan head on a deep black body, very delicate aroma for a stout, nice rich taste with smoky aftertaste. Not bad.

Dec 2009: Brown 500ml, bottle conditioned, poured into a vase shaped pint glass. You arenโt going to get a much darker beer than this, a true stout, Imperial or otherwise, jet black colour, with a tight tan coloured head on top. Liquorice hits your nose straight away, dark chocolate malts can also be found if you sniff well enough. Malty, hoppy and all mixed in with the overiding flavour of liquorice roots. Chocolate and coffee feel in there too. Full bodied and almost creamy and rich, but no quiet that opulent or delicious in its intensity. Easy to drink and a nice nightcap sort of drink, wouldnโt want a gallon, but a pint was just Dandy.

Cask at the Grape and Grain beer festival, Crystal Palace. Dark brown pour with a reddish hue, tan head. Chocolate, berries and wood in the nose. Dark fruit, coffee and chocolate flavours. Nice bitter hit. Smoky, bitter finish. Tasty.

Cask at Brigantes, York. Near black, small creamy head. Fruity licorice aroma. Sweet with plenty of resin and asphalt. Full bodied with rounded mouthfeel. Spun sugar and treacle covered in resin and asphalt. Punishingly bitter finish.

Cask at GBBF 2011. It pours opaque black, with a thin bubbly beige head. The nose is soy sauce, sweet caramel, roasted malt and liquorice. The taste is roasted malt, charcoal, coffee, dark cherry, bitter chocolate, wood, astringency and burnt malt, with a bitter-dry finish. Low carbonation and disappointingly thin. Ok.

Chelmsford Beer Festival. Opaque dark brown beer, tiny suddy tan head. Smooth palate, semi dry. Slightly bitter dark malt with mild roast. Trace of coffee. Bubblegum sweetness in the undertone! Finishes dry with some orangey hop coming through and quite a bit of hop bitterness. Bitter aftertaste. A robust stout that I enjoyed but it has a few sharp edges.

From cask. Pours dark brown to black with a small tan head. Aroma is roasted dark malty and chocolate. Bitter, roasted malty, chocolate and dark roasted malty. Dark malty and solid bitter dry finish.

Cask at GBBF, Day 1. Pours brown-black with a light, bubbly tan head. Lactic cocoa nose, mild roast. Sweet flavor with dry roastiness, mocha, some dark fruit. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Sweet finish, nice roasted malts and burnt brown sugar. Good beer.
