Double IPA

Our take on the West Coast-style Double India Pale Ale, The Oracle places hop intensity first and foremost, making only the slightest concession to malt and balance.

The fireworks start with the aromatic punch of dry-hop sessions with hop varieties from the Pacific Northwest. Resinous, citrusy hop flavors mixed with aggressive bitterness from a massive kettle addition deliver on that aromatic promise.

Location: Bottle shared by jcos, 9/25/14

Aroma: It has a nose of citrus/grapefruit and resin hops, with some floral notes as well.
Appearance: It pours a clear orange-gold color with a small white head.
Flavor: The flavor is quite nicely bitter, with enough sweetness for some balance.
Palate: The body is medium, it has a good, somewhat sticky mouthfeel, and a fairly dry finish.
Overall Impression: This is an excellent beer. Really quite enjoyed drinking. Another outstanding offering from Bells, which came as no shock to me. Thanks again for the share Kramer!

Bottle [thanks to mista] shared with Joes and Judyvv. Clear yellow to orange color, full sized off-white head that lasts for quite a while. Aroma is malts, hops, slightly resin and pine but it doesn’t convince me really.. Taste malts, hops, very bitter, no fruityness. Decent body and carbonation. Well I must be honest, this is quite disappointing.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Ariel’s place. Thanks Tom C. Slightly hazy golden with a white head. Aroma of citric hops, slightly piney, a bit of alcohol note and a bit of malt. Sweetish malty flavor with some slightly stale citric and piney hops, a bit resinous, finishes with strong bitterness and an alcoholic hint. Medium-bodied, kinda chewy.

New Beer Distributors, NYC bottle ($3): Pours amber with an off-white head. Aroma is pine, resin, grapefruit, and some sugary malt. Taste is quite bitter, with only a bit of sweetness. Nice hoppy aftertaste. The citrus and pine flavors hit hard. This is pretty much what one does and should expect from the masters at Bells.

From a 12 oz bottle shared at home. Pours a clear copper with an off white head. Fruity nose. Flavors of orange and grapefruit with pine resin and a big smooth malt backbone. Bitter finish.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 8/8/2014. Pours slightly hazy bright orange color with a 2 finger dense and rocky off white head, with incredible retention, that reduces to a large cap that lasts. Dense soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, orange peel, citrus rind, floral, grass, pine, light caramel, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of bright citrus/tropical hops and moderate malt sweetness; with good strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, orange peel, citrus rind, floral, grass, pine, light caramel, and floral/grassy earthiness. Good amount of pine/citrus rind bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pinapple, lemon/orange zest, citrus rind, pine, light caramel, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity of juicy citrus/tropical hops and moderate malt sweetness; with a good malt/bitterness balance and minimal cloying bitterness after the finish. Medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a moderately slick/sticky mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is fairly well hidden with a small warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent DIPA. All around great complexity and balance of citrus/tropical hops and moderate malt sweetness; and fairly smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

Bottle. Poured a clear copper color with a medium sized white head.Aroma was citrus hops, pine resin, some light florals, caramel malts. Flavor was pretty malty, with a decent balance of pine notes, grassy notes, some squeezed lemons. Lots of booze on this one, though not offensive. Very warming.
