The name Altbier, which means 'old beer', refers to the pre-lager brewing method of using a warm top-fermenting yeast. Over time the Alt yeast adjusted to lower temperatures, and the Alt brewers would store or lager the beer after fermentation, giving the ale some of the lean dryness of a lager but with fruity notes. We wanted to show how Okell's could approach this tradition and, take it from us, it is worth a try!

A beer brewed in the true Altbier manner, a burnished copper colour, and with a cooler fermentation and 2 weeks cold storage that leads to a crisp elegant and fresh flavour, with hints of gooseberry and citrus, made with Nelson Sauvin hops from New Zealand.

Ingredients: Pale Ale, Crystal, Amber, Hops: 1) Target /Fuggles 2) Aurora / Saaz 3) Hallertau / Nelson Sauvin.

Cask handpull at Thomas Ingoldsby, JDW, Canterbury during the Spoon Mass Tasting. Clear reddish amber with a lasting dark beige head. Certainly a good looking beer. Some very good fruit in the mouth red and dark fruits. Malts are quite sweet too. Not much like Uerige fresh or a couple of the others, as this is a bit fuller than something like the Schlossel. But overall it’s a tasty fullish sweetish malty beer with some dryness on the finsih. Would I pick this as an Alt in a blind tasting? Probably not, more a malt led best bitter. Drinkable enough though.
