A dark seasonal drink. The advent of ‘Old’ is eagerly awaited by its devotees. Reminiscent of the mild ales produced during the early part of this century, it is brewed to an original gravity of 1040° -1044° using a high percentage of crystal malt and black sugars. The result is a soft, full beer with a nutty palate which has been awarded First Prize at the International Brewers’ Exhibition on three separate occasions.

Cask at the Garland, Redhill. As the Old Ale. Pours almost black with a small beige head. Aroma of chocolate, roasted malt, vanilla and dried fruits. Moderate sweetness, moderate roasted bitterness. Medium body, slight oily texture, soft carbonation. Dry, nutty finish. Grower.

Cask at Royal Oak. Deep brown black body, translucent stained glass red edges. Deep malt tones..chocolate, caramel. A pinch of diacetyl maybe, but suitable for the style . Mellow fruity ale yeast undertones. Not really what I associate the style with overall.

Cask at the Ship, Meads in Eastbourne. A beer of huge stature, strong flavour of toffee. Obviously quite sweet and malty but very drinkable, much more pleasant pub pint than the Christmas ale. Also drank in bottle form, more watery, lower abv, much prefer cask version but still an outstanding beer in bottle form. ---- Confirmed at pubs across Lewes. ---- Confirmed at Eastbourne Beer Festival. A.delightful quaffable beer. (10/2017) --- Cask at the Eight bells Jevington. 4 to 3.6. strong caramels but less wondrous. (23/12/19) ---- Cask at The Lamb, Eastbourne. Boom what a beauty is the Harvey's old ale. So much love for its sweet not so sweet wonderousness. 3.6 to 3.9 --- Confirmed on cask at The Victoria, Eastbourne. So gluggable.

Cask draft at the Royal Oak. Dark, opaque brown with small, lasting frothy head. Sweet malty aroma, brown bread baking in the oven. Taste features this same steadiness, with a crisp, dry bitterness. Medium weight, smooth. Lovely.
