A dark seasonal drink. The advent of ‘Old’ is eagerly awaited by its devotees. Reminiscent of the mild ales produced during the early part of this century, it is brewed to an original gravity of 1040° -1044° using a high percentage of crystal malt and black sugars. The result is a soft, full beer with a nutty palate which has been awarded First Prize at the International Brewers’ Exhibition on three separate occasions.

Cask at the White Horse Old Ale Festival, 19/11/15. Extremely dark mahogany brown with a well appointed beige covering that retains well, a real looker of a beer. Nose is earthy, light yeast, dark fruit shreds, toffee, spice. Taste comprises brown bread, red berry, light cocoa, fruit cake, light spice, raisens. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with light peppery notes. Solid stuff, lots of depth for the ABV.

Cask at the Oakford Social Club, Reading. Pleasant surprise to see a Harvey’s brew (other than Sussex Best) in a non-Harvey’s tie. Chestnut coloured with a thick beige head. Rich, smooth mouthfeel. Lots of chocolate flavour balanced against some old oak wardrobes with a hint of flowers and some dry red wine in the finish. Decent pint this.

Cask, at the Wharf. A dark reddish brown beer with a small beige head. Quite weak nose with some roasted malts and dried fruits. Caramel and a touch of bread. There’s a nice bitterness in the flavor, with bready, roasted, caramel malts and raisins. Medium body, soft carbonation, quite dry. Malty finish. Rather boring this one, and i was expecting more. 141026
