Autumn Brown Ale
Sierra Nevada uses malt within days of roasting at the peak of its flavor to give Tumbler a gracefully smooth malt character. Two-row pale, crystal 40, chocolate and smoked malts give it a malty complexity. Challenger hops in the boil add balancing bitterness, while more Challengers and some Goldings give just enough hop flavor in the finish to balance all that malt.

Tap at the Black Heart, Camden, 13/12/13. Reddish amber with a thin off white covering/swirl that dissipates to edgework. Nose is a little muted carrying fruit notes and caramel although picked up a little in depth as the beer warmed slightly. Taste comprises Ribena Berry fruit, caramel malt, biscuit, hoppy back notes. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, drying closure with light fruit notes. Ok stuff, easy drinking affair.

Bottle from Cotteridge Wines; dark chestnut brown pour with thin tan head, roasted malt aroma, taste has caramel and roasted malts some nuttiness and a hint of coffee, slight hop bitterness.

Bottle from Drinkmonger. Hazy deep amber body with a medium beige head. Light carbonation. Nice lacing. Aroma of wood, lightly roasted malt and toast. Flavour of nuts, toast, roasted malt, biscuit and vegetable stock. Tastes just like a Bitter. Thin body with an oily mouthfeel. Soft carbonation. A solid beer, but a bit dull.

Bottle 2013: Nose is leather, slight caramel lightest touch of smoke. Taste is caramel, leather, grain, nut, leading to a lightly hopped finish. A nice brown beer.

12 ounce bottle into signature pint glass, bottled on 7/3/2013. Pours lightly cloudy deep ruby red color with a 1-2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big caramel, toast, toffee, chocolate, brown sugar, nuttiness, brown bread, floral, light pepper, and floral/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of malt notes with moderate earthy hops; and good strength. Taste of caramel, toast, toffee, brown sugar, chocolate, brown bread, nuttiness, floral, light pepper, and floral/toasted earthiness. Light earthy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toast, toffee, chocolate, brown sugar, brown bread, nuttiness, floral, light pepper, and toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity of dark/toasted malt flavors with a moderate earthy hop balance; with great robustness and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a moderately creamy and smooth mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent brown ale. All around great balance and complexity of malt and moderate hop flavors; and very smooth to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

Pours dark brown with small tan head. Fall beer with earthy notes, nuts, spice, caramel and roasted malts. Good hop balance. A little bit thin.

Dark Brown, Good Head, Decent Spotty Lacing. Faint Roasted Aroma. Slightly Toasted Malt, Light Bitter. High Carbonation, Watery. Too Thin and Bland. Better than Newcastle but miles behind New Holland’s Cabin Fever or Goose Island’s Christmas Ale. Drinkable but disappointing. Even if you pass it, you not gonna miss much...

Clearance bottle at Famous Liquors. Yes, likely out of date, and the resaon for some oxidation under the cap. But also some sharp prickly hop smell as well. Pours a clean, ruddy brown color with a big head of foam. Has the familiar earthy nuttiness to the Goose Hex Nut and similar beers. A bit more roast to it, maybe even some smoke, slides toward the Porter end. Hearty and filling.
