A radically different beer... it has roast barley added to the pale and crystal malts. It has a deep burnished copper colour, a rich port wine aroma, a big chocolate and creamy malt palate and a dry, grainy, roasty finish balanced by hop bitterness and tart fruit. It is a remarkably complex beer that deepens and changes as you sup it.

Finishes with light sweetness, like caramel. Not super interesting but decent enough for the style. Maroon pour with decent head and lacing. Tap at Snally.

Draft at Snallygaster 2024. Poured a kind of light cola color with a small, creamy head. Aroma was big sweet malts, some chocolate, light barley grain. Tasty stuff.

British pint at Shelter is a crystal clear caramel brown with a big cap of eggshell head. Caramel, brown sugar and treacle nose. Malt. Sweet tea. Flavor is sweet but also lots of tannins and tea and soggy bread. Off dry, tannic finish. Bang on for the style.

Cask at the brewpub. Aroma is very subdued, little nutty, some dried fruits mid copper coloured pour with a lasting frothy white head. Flavour is composed if light nutty grains, dried fruit, light berry. Palate is light and a little watery . Low carbonation. Not much to it really. OK but dull.

On cask at Black Bull, Coniston - Nothing like the bottled version I’d had not an hour earlier, and nowhere near as good. Deep brown body, thick brilliant white head. Nose is more flowery than the bottle, taste is more floury. Thinner too. Looks better mind you.

On cask at the Black Bull. Appearance - very dark brown and pretty much opaque. Decent head. Nose - very gentle toffee and nuts. Very elusive and almost not there at all. Taste - very light and lacking in the flavours expected from the nose. A delicate amount if toffee there. Palate - light bodied with a creamy texture and a finish that pretty much disappears. Overall - the least inspiring ale of the day.
