Trip to Yellowstone. Copper-gold in color with a three-finger head. Aroma is pine and grapefruit. Taste is also pine and grapefruit.

Part of a number of solo cans purchased at a store in Canyon Village in Yellowstone. This was stickily malty with no real hop presence. Light copper and clear with off-white head.

On tap at the brewery. Clear golden, white head. Moderate hoppiness, citrus, grassy, caramel malty backbone. Sweetish with medium bitter finish. Medium bodied.

Draft. Rich amber beer with a cream head. Light citrus aroma. Light citrus and malt flavor. Medium bodied. Light citrus and malt linger with light caramel.

355ml bottle. (6.1% ABV) Pours a slightly hazy orange with a medium, soapy, long lasting, off-white head that leaves curtains of lace. Sweet aroma of caramel malt, orange, grapefruit and light pine. Sweet flavour of caramel malt, grapefruit and pine with a dry, mildly bitter, hoppy finish. Medium body with an oily texture and average carbonation. Simple but ok.

On tap at the Sun Room in the Lake Yellowstone Hotel. Pours a dark, bronze color, with a medium, beige head. The nose is rye, some strong pine sap, chalk, and mud. Not very sweet, with a sharp, biting bitter flavor. Medium body, thick, and grainy. This is a pretty nice IPA, but a little harsh and off. Could be better.

At Soda Butte Lodge Prospector Restaurant, Cooke City. Pours clear dark amber with a lasting, small, frothy, off-white head. Smells a bit off. The aroma contains hops, hay, grass, malt and some caramel. It tastes medium to light hoppy bitter, light malty sweet, with a light bitter finish and lingering maltiness. Medium body, oily texture, fizzy carbonation. It’s like a combination of an IPA and an Amber Ale...

Taking a trip to Yellowstone Park gives me the opportunity to sample local brews. Bent Nail was bought as a single 12 oz bottle at a Billings establishment. I could not get it as cold as I would prefer but that is not going to stop me. Drinking out of the bottle restricts opinion on color and head. A smell gives a cascade hops grain and citrus reply. The taste is a light hoppiness, bread and a slow-ending bitterness. No world beater but fair enough.

Reviewed from notes, this was poured into a nonic pint glass.
The appearance was a fairly transparent red color with a less than a finger’s worth of white foamy head. Dissipation is moderate and nice. Spotty lacing.
The aroma starts with some dried grapefruit rind-like hops and then gently flows in a caramel malt balance. Subtle grassy hop character gently infuses as it warms.
The flavor balances nicely between caramel malt and grapefruit rind bitterness. Well balanced malt to hops aftertaste strolls into the finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a clean semi-sweet to bitter sessionabililty about it. Carbonation feels good with some touch of prickliness from the bitter hop component.
Overall, for the most part, it’s a pretty good AIPA. I could see myself coming back to this.

bottle at Old Faithful Inn in Yellowstone. Might have been a bad batch - or expired - but this was pretty unimpressive IPA.
